(NaturalHealth365) What really causes skin cancer? We?re offered sunscreens, drugs and surgery ? but conventional medicine never talks about a solution to our problems. Here?s some breaking news: skin cancer develops from the inside out. (don?t blame the sun)
Keep reading for the (unpopular) truth about disease prevention
Modern diets, rich in unstable molecules, promote free radical damage within every organ of the body and provide the perfect environment for all types of cancer.
In 1993, a study funded by the National Cancer Institute, looked at nearly 30,000 Chinese people. These were healthy subjects who were in an area with a very high cancer mortality rate ? and a low intake of micronutrients. Can you guess what happened?
A closer look at the protective value of antioxidants
The study was to determine the effects of antioxidant supplementation on this select population. Antioxidant intervention reduced the incident of people succumbing to disease within two years of starting a supplementation program ? but the most astounding part was that the skin cancer rate decreased by 70 percent!
One of the most common ways known to protect your skin from sun damage is the use of broad spectrum ?sun protection factor? (SPF) creams, lotions and sprays. But here?s a shocker ? Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD, associate clinical professor at UCLA reveals that eating your way to environmental protection can decrease your chance of cellular damage while increasing your cellular health. Why doesn?t this make your local T.V. news program? (hmm)
Once again ? nature is better than synthetic chemicals
Mother Nature?s protection has been around a lot longer than suntan lotions, and up to now has done an excellent job. Protecting your skin is the same as protecting your health. It?s simple ? add more deeply colored, (antioxidant rich) fruits and vegetables to your diet on a daily basis.
Besides supplying essential nutrients ? new research shows that strawberries may protect against dangerous UV rays. Spanish and Italian researchers found that strawberry extract applied externally helped protect cells from UVA damage. The researchers? found that what gives strawberries their color are the anthocyanins, which help protect us from disease.
Looking at fruit in a whole new way
According to research from the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Texas A&M University ? berries, cherries and pomegranates which are all rich in ellagic acid (a cancer fighter) help protect our skin from sun damage. In addition, leafy greens, which are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin ? inhibit UV damage to skin cells. Generally speaking, citrus fruits rich in limonene have been shown to reduce the risk of all skin cancers and particularly squamous cell carcinomas by at least 30 percent.
Inner protection from skin cancer can be delicious
Organic Cocoa (dark chocolate) contains 4 times as much phenols and catechins as tea ? these antioxidants protect our skin from both sunburn and skin cancer. It?s also really good for cardiovascular health.
Interestingly enough, the carotenoid compounds which give fruits and vegetables their color are used by plants for protection from the sun. Foods that contain these sun protectors are: apricots, mango, carrots, sweet potatoes and beets. It?s amazing ? plant foods are so intelligent.
Before the advent of suntan lotions ? past generations consumed enough whole foods to be able to work outdoors safely. What you eat reveals itself from the inside out. In fact, many (natural) health experts agree, sunscreen technology is NOT going to save you from skin cancer or any disease created by a poor diet and lifestyle.
