Egypt's Mursi-outsiders must help end Syrian bloodshed

DUBAI (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi said bloodshed in Syria would only end if there were "effective interference" from outside.

Mursi told a summit of non-aligned nations in Tehran, one of President Bashar al-Assad's few remaining allies, that Syria needed a peaceful transition to democracy and an end to the current "oppressive regime".

"The bloodshed in Syria is our responsibility on all our shoulders and we have to know that the bloodshed cannot stop without effective interference from all of us," Mursi said.

The Syrian delegation to the NAM summit walked out during Mursi's speech, Al Jazeera television reported.

Mursi, a moderate Egyptian Islamist, said solidarity with the Syrian people "against an oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy is an ethical duty" and a strategic necessity.

"We all have to announce our full solidarity with the struggle of those seeking freedom and justice in Syria, and translate this sympathy into a clear political vision that supports a peaceful transition to a democratic system of rule that reflects the demands of the Syrian people for freedom."

Confederate flag to be taken off General Lee?

By Courtney Garcia, TODAY contributor and Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Update, 1 p.m. PT: This story has been updated with a new statement from Warner Bros. Consumer Products.

The 1969 Dodge Charger from ?The Dukes of Hazzard,? known to the world as the General Lee, prominently features the Confederate flag on its roof in the popular 1970s-1980s TV show. Some reports now say the flag will be removed from certain toy versions of the car, and at least one former "Dukes" cast member tells TODAY he's furious.

Everett Collection

Tom Wopat and John Schneider flew around the hills of Hazzard County in the General Lee on "The Dukes of Hazzard." Now the car's Confederate flag has become an issue.

Exactly what products might be altered isn't clear. As reported by ScreenCrush, a poster to HobbyTalk.com's message board?wrote there that he was told by a sales rep for the Tomy toy company that "starting January 1, 2013 all Dukes of Hazzard General Lee vehicles will not be allowed to be produced with the Confederate flag on the top of the vehicle. This directive has been passed onto us from the licensor Warner Brothers."

But a Warner Bros. Consumer Products spokesperson denied the report, telling TODAY on Thursday, "We were not, and are not, planning to change the design of the General Lee on merchandise. ?All reports to the contrary have been inaccurate."

Despite the denial, HobbyTalk readers?had no problem sharing?various sightings of cars without the flag. Wrote one, "Not surprising. They have been removing the image from the model boxes for years. I have one that was a giveaway from the Kansas City Royals that has the Royals logo on the trunk and no roof flag."

Another wrote, "Was at a Hobby Lobby today. In the model kit section was a 1/25th scale General Lee ... without the Confederate flag on the roof!!! It looked strange, to say the least! It's like the Batmobile without the bat logo."

But another reader took a different stance. "I am from the West and yes to me the Confederate flag does not?(represent) anything positive," he wrote. "We don't see Germans flying around the swastika flags (because) it's?their history."

And yet another wrote that rather than produce a General Lee without the flag, he believed that toymakers would just stop making reproductions of the car. "Warner Bros. will no longer endorse the license for anything that has the Confederate flag on it," he wrote.?"Therefore, if you are a die-cast manufacturer, your license will not be approved if your sample has a Confederate flag on it, (such as the General Lee, Hazzard County Patrol cars, Cooter's tow truck and so on) if the sample is produced without a flag then it will be issued, but no one is going to do a General Lee with just the 01s and General Lee lettering, it would look silly."

That same writer noted that with an earlier version of the General Lee,?"Warner Bros. requested the flag not be seen when it was on a store shelf. A removable, body-colored cling was attached to the roof of the car to cover the flag until purchase. I knew when this happened that things would be changing soon."

Although the report still hasn't been fully confirmed, the mere idea that the General Lee could be altered has angered??Dukes of Hazzard? star Ben Jones. Jones played the General Lee's mechanic, Cooter Davenport, on "Dukes of Hazzard" and later served two terms in Congress as a Democrat from Georgia. He now owns Cooter?s Place, a chain of??Dukes of Hazzard? museums located?in Gatlinburg and Nashville, Tenn.

After hearing the report, Jones?released a letter of disapproval to the press on Wednesday, criticizing what he feels is a ?narrow-minded, elitist? move on the part of the television studio.

?More than 33 years since the show premiered on CBS-TV on Friday nights, Warner Bros. has issued a new and terribly insulting attack on the South, a region and a culture which Hollywood has trashed for decades," Jones wrote. "Some unnamed genius at the company feels that the flag is 'offensive to some' and therefore it has no business on a classic TV comedy about a bunch of good ol' boys and girls in the Southern mountains. This is a new level of "P.C." idiocy. I don't know about you, but I am tired of being insulted by morons.?

Jones?tells?TODAY that the decision could hurt the "Dukes of Hazzard" brand by misrepresenting the nature of the flag to young people who watch the show.

?It will make kids unhappy and confused,? he says. ?To me, they?re destroying innocence. They?re not responding to people who watch the show, they?re responding to those who don?t follow it. It?s insulting to my culture and my work.?

He adds, ?The flag is a part of the almost perfect design of that car, which has been voted the most popular car in the history of film and television. That?s not going to go away. It?s an idiotic decision.?

Jones stresses that he was an avid supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, participating in countless demonstrations?in the South in the?1960s. He says he?believes in a deep respect for all people, but believes that to assume the Confederate flag merely represents slavery is to overlook history.

?I have a good feel for where people?s heads are on this thing and I don?t understand why it?s happening,? Jones told TODAY. ?When ?The Dukes of Hazzard? was a big show, it was this positive thing about the car and the culture and the kids, and that went on for years. It is a permanent part of Americana.?

Should the Confederate flag be taken off the General Lee? Vote in our poll and tell us on Facebook.

Harry Belafonte and Machel Montano lead NY parade to mark their countries? 50th

NEW YORK, USA, Friday August 31, 2012 ? In recognition of the 50th anniversary of independence of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, the two nations will be honoured at the head of next week?s West Indian American Day Carnival Parade in Brooklyn.

Actor, singer and social activist Harry Belafonte and soca sensation Machel Montano, representing Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago respectively, will lead the Labour Day carnival parade on September 3 along Eastern Parkway, from Schenectady Avenue to Grand Army Plaza.

Millions of spectators are expected to view the colourful annual procession of masqueraders and music presented by the West Indian Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) under the theme ?Caribbean History, Culture and Unity?.

Events leading up to the big parade are already underway as WIADCA presents four days of Caribbean carnival entertainment for children and adults.

Yesterday, ?Mas, Mas and More Mas? previewed the spectacular masquerade costumes that will grace the Eastern Parkway parade route on Labour Day.

Today, the youth-focused Stay in School Concert takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and features music, a fashion show and spoken word performances. This WIADCA event is designed to encourage young people to continue their education and steer clear of drugs, juvenile delinquency and gangs.

Tonight, the Brass Fest will turn the spotlight on some of the Caribbean?s top entertainers including Mr Vegas, the Machel Montano HD ensemble, Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy, Edwin Yearwood, WCK and Krosfyah.

Saturday is Junior Carnival Day complete with its own parade from St John?s Place to the Brooklyn Museum Grounds, while Panorama, the popular steelband competition, gets into full swing later that night.

The Angler: The Auto-Biography

A Tribute to Those Who Stole My Heart: The Jaguar XJ220 By chance, I happened upon a quaint little gem devoted to the preservation of the automotive arts while on vacation this summer. Though perhaps a bit rundown, the Sarasota Classic Car Museum held several cars that captured my interest. Of course, there was the odd Ferrari, some Maserati?s, and even a Mercedes-Benz owned by John Lennon, but no other car made my heart skip a beat a first glance like the cool-grey beast sleeping soundly at the end of a dimly lit hall; the Jaguar XJ220 Perhaps the highest summit ever peaked by Jaguar in their mountainous career, the XJ220 stands high above any of the other big cats the company has or possibly ever will produce. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6, which produces a beating heart capable of generating 542 base horsepower, the XJ220 claimed the world record for fastest production car when it leapt onto the automotive scene in 1992.

(Jaguar XJ220 Concept as it appeared in the official 1988 press packet.)

Originally designed as a demonstration of Jaguar?s design studio and engineering team?s prowess, the XJ220 was welcomed with such enthusiasm at the 1988 British Motor Show that the company formed an exploratory group to investigate the feasibility of turning the concept into a production car. Many of the concept?s design features however ? such as scissor doors, a 6.2-litre V12 engine, and 4-wheel drive layout ? were sacrificed in the name of saving weight and improved performance, upsetting many customers in the process. Couple to that the global recession of the early nineties and customers challenging Jaguar in court over failure to meet initial production claims, and the result was the colossal commercial flop the XJ220 eventually became. Despite a sticker price of ?460,000 (or $747,500 USD), Jaguar lost money on each XJ220 and was only able to produce 281 units, far less than the initially promised 350. The car also suffered severe turbo lag, as well as poor braking and cornering on the track But if you?re one of the lucky few to ever behold a XJ220 crouching quietly at a stoplight, you?ll quickly realize the appeal of this car lies not with the figures, but rather with the feelings it evokes. From the three-slit gills at the base of the front windscreen and rear window, to the way lids retract to conceal the headlamps, one cannot but feel as though the XJ220 is a living, breathing, road devouring apparition rather than a collection of mechanical bits and bobs. This car has soul, which is the most important quality that can be attained. Cars with soul provide links through which the driver and car become one, separating them from the everyday, humdrum commuting machines. The XJ220 rounds every bend and dip in the road as athletically and gracefully as the powerful cat it bears as its mascot. It does not merely move along the crowded motorway, but rather lies low in the brush, stalking other the vehicles, looking for an unsuspecting Toyota Prius to ambush or a docile herd of Freightliner 18-wheelers to spook into a stampede.?? It?s why this car Stole My Heart.

5 big banks have given $10.6B in homeowner relief

(AP) ? Five of the biggest U.S. lenders have provided $10.6 billion in relief under a landmark settlement over foreclosure abuses, including reducing struggling homeowners' mortgage balances by $1.3 billion.

The monitor overseeing the $25 billion settlement says the banks provided the relief in the first four months of the three-year program. In his first progress report, Joseph Smith Jr. disclosed Wednesday that $8.7 billion of the $10.6 billion in relief was in the form of short sales, in which lenders agree to accept less than what the seller owes on the mortgage.

Lenders are increasingly favoring short sales rather than waiting for troubled loans to go through the foreclosure process.

Bank of America Corp., which is required by the settlement to provide the largest portion of the relief, $8.6 billion, hadn't completed any modifications of first-lien mortgages or refinancings as of June 30, according to the report.

Smith's report covers the period from March 1 through June 30.

Bank of America said, however, that from July 1 through Aug. 21, it completed $596.2 million in modifications of first-lien mortgages and $227.2 million in refinancings. It also noted it has taken on $5.8 billion in short sales and completed $1.7 billion of second-lien modifications.

"We believe we will reach or exceed all program targets" within the first year, said Dan Frahm spokesman for Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America. "We continue working to reach eligible borrowers with these programs to prevent foreclosure, help our customers save money and support the recovery of the housing market."

The other four banks, and the amount of relief they are obligated to provide, are Wells Fargo & Co., $4.3 billion; JPMorgan Chase & Co., $4.2 billion; Citigroup Inc., $1.8 billion; and Ally Financial Inc., $200 million. They also will pay about $5.5 billion to the U.S. and state governments.

The settlement between the banks and the federal government and 49 states was struck in February, ending a painful chapter of the financial crisis when home values sank and millions edged toward foreclosure. Many companies had processed foreclosures without verifying documents.

The agreement will reduce mortgage loans for only a fraction of those Americans who owe more than their homes are worth. About 11 million households are underwater, and the settlement is expected to help about a million of them.

Of the $1.3 billion in reduced mortgage principal, according to Smith's report, Bank of America had provided $54.2 million as of June 30; JPMorgan, $428.2 million; Citigroup, $429.5 million; Ally, $168.8 million; and Wells Fargo, $249.3 million.

"More hard work remains as the banks work to meet their obligations," Smith said in a statement.

Learn To Take No For The Answer

?

I spent some time this morning with an agent in our office, she was very upset about some recent attempts at cold calling. More like warm calling, they were leads which registered on our site, but they did not ask to be called.

My question about this is why put your phone number down on a contact form if you don't expect to be called?

She was just sure that she couldn't do this job. And I don't know if she can or not. But the point is that sales of any kind involves lots of "NO"s. It just does! Some old sales book I had says that it takes 10 "no"s to get to a "yes." So each no is one step closer.

I have always liked that!

It's not fun...but it also should not be what defines your day. These are just people, and if they are not going to become clients, then the sooner we realize that, the sooner we can move onto those who would like to be.

We are defined by who we are as people, as friends, as parents, as spouses, as children, as professionals...not whether we caught someone at a bad moment. Who cares? True sales people learn early to take that NO as an answer and move on.

Physical Therapy - Improves Balance, Gait and Strengthens Muscles ...

?

Since one in three Senior over age 65 will fall and for a third of them, it will be a life changing experience, Fall Prevention is a primary concern for anyone over 65, 75 or 85. Medicare A covers Physical therapy at home and Medicare B will cover outpatient. For anyone who has Medicare or an HMO, speak with your doctor and ask whether Physical Therapy will be beneficial. Boca Home Care will Help.

Learning to use a walker with help of a Physical Therapist

Whether you or an aging loved one walks independently, with a cane or walker, age in of itself is a risk factor for falling. If you live alone, get a Personal Emergency Response System ? so you don?t spend hours or longer on the floor, unable to get up by yourself. If you use a cane or walker, are you using the right one for your needs? Are you using it properly? Boca Home Care can send a Registered Nurse and Physical Therapist to your home to evaluate and start a care plan.

Since Falls can often lead to fractures?. a broken hip, anything and everything you can do to increase your odds of NOT falling should be done. Clearly get safer shoes, improve lighting in the home, remove clutter, get grab bars etc. All things to make your environment safer.

You can also do more to make your leg/body safer. Medicare and (likely) HMOs will even cover the cost of a Physical Therapists. Medicare A ? in home therapy is covered at 100% and if you prefer to do outpatient PT with aquatics and weights, then Medicare B will cover the cost.

A licensed Physical Therapist will meet with you, assess your condition and needs. They will then put together a plan for up to two months to work with you. They will teach you exercises, how best to navigate and how to best use your walking equipment.? Your legs can be strengthened, gait and balance improved.

Usually following a fall, fracture and Rehab stay triggers further Physical Therapy. However, with an order from your doctor, you can receive physical therapy as a preventative measure.

For people over 75 years old, who basically are in good health, the whole name of the game is ?don?t fall?.? P/T is available to you? consider using it and help prevent a downward spiral which could end up causing you to give up your home and much of your independence. Speak with your doctor. Bring up the idea of PT to them. (Fall) Prevention really is some of the best medicine practiced.

Systems Thinking HR, Recruiting, Social Media Policies, Human ...

Today?s Successful Leaders

A few years back, I learned about and quickly embraced the?Systems Thinking?approach to business. I was encouraged to read a book called? The Fifth Discipline?by?Peter Senge?and I took a couple of courses related specifically to this topic. Systems thinkers look an awful lot like today?s successful leaders. Understanding that we all must work together to achieve success is part of this approach. Problems do not become an issue or represent a setback, they are merely thought of as forces of change or underlying trends.

Recognize the strength of interrelationships

The inner workings of an organization,?not individuals or a single events, are what create a true system. The ongoing process becomes the primary focus in this type of thinking. Peter Senge believes that it is often poorly designed systems which cause breakdowns or failures, not poorly motivated people. Outside forces affect the reactions and responses of the inside individuals.?This is a system.?

Force in Numbers

Tightly-focused actions have more impact and produce lasting changes if they are spun with the right force and attached to the right influence. This is called leverage. For example, sharing a new or refined business practice with the entire work group will have more impact than if each individual had been instructed separately. There is?force in numbers?- you?ve?heard this.

A couple years ago, I called a family meeting. We,?not?I?alone, had an important decision to make and I felt a conclusion could be reached with more acceptance if I leveraged it as a group decision, not mine alone or one that was easily influenced by one individual over another. We had to decide if it was better for our family to move closer to my work or continue the headlong fight to stay in our current home. We aired everyone?s opinions, looked at the 10,000-foot view and the 10-foot view. It was important to me that each voice was heard and that each brain behind the individual voices understood the pros and the cons of our decision.

My then 13-year old son came up with just as many valid points as my twenty-one year old daughter. It is never easy to make such an impactful decision. But the pros and cons list, as well as the free speech granted legal and important to this matter made a difference in how we all felt about the decision and how that decision was ultimately supported. We,?my family, are a system.

My department at work is another system, with several influences. Our company, as a whole, is yet another system, with even more influences and multiple focused actions by each department. Everything I do, whether it is driving on a busy highway or withdrawing money from my checking account, is part of another system.

When all my systems are go and functioning at their best capacity, it means my family is, my work is, my world is. ?It means I am.

It Takes More than a village, it takes a universe.
My universe.

UN chief talks nuclear standoff, Syria with Iran

UN chief Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday held talks with Iran's leaders on its nuclear activities, the Syria conflict and human rights ahead of a summit at which Tehran aims to boost its international standing.

Ban met with the Islamic republic's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after separately seeing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and parliament speaker Ali Larijani, Iranian media said.

After his meeting with Larijani, Iran's parliamentary news website quoted Ban as saying: "We have concerns about the human rights situation in Iran... Also I will discuss the nuclear issue with the Islamic Republic of Iran officials."

He said "Iran can play an important role in solving the Syrian crisis peacefully," adding that "the Syrian people have suffered a lot ... with more than 20,000 dying in the past 18 months."

Larijani, for his part, said "unfortunately, some big countries have acted adventurously in the region and have created disruption in the region like what we are witnessing in Syria."

Iran, the chief ally of Syria's regime, accuses the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar of sustaining the armed revolt in Syria.

The UN chief was to leave on Friday, after attending the two-day summit of the 120-member Non-Aligned Movement.

The United States and Israel had criticised Ban's presence at the summit, even though the NAM represents nearly two-thirds of UN member states.

That has led Iran to seize upon Ban's attendance as a victory over its enemies and a sign it is not as isolated on the international scene as the United States has claimed.

Iran is locked in a deepening showdown with the United States and the rest of the UN Security Council over its disputed nuclear programme. It has also been threatened with possible Israeli air strikes on its nuclear facilities.

The West fears the programme is aimed at developing a nuclear weapons break-out capability. Iran denies that, insisting its atomic activities are exclusively peaceful.

The UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, is expected to release its latest report on Iran's nuclear programme this week -- perhaps coinciding with the NAM summit.

The report is likely to highlight Iran's expanding uranium enrichment activities -- which the Security Council has repeatedly demanded be suspended -- and Tehran's refusal to allow IAEA inspectors into a military site, Parchin, suspected of hosting explosives tests for nuclear warhead designs.

On Wednesday, the IAEA moved to create a special Iran "task force" to scrutinise the country's implementation of its nuclear obligations and its compliance with IAEA and Security Council provisions.

Motorola, Intel taking us to the edge in London on Sept. 18

Motorola-Intel

Intel and Motorola joined forces earlier this year - now it's time to see the fruits of their labor.

That's a big announcement, eh? Motorola and Intel, the marriage first announced way back in January at CES, finally appears to be coming to fruition. (Right on schedule, actually.) So what will we see when the two companies "take us to the edge" on Sept. 18 in London? Most likely, it'll be a production-caliber Android smartphone based off Intel's Medfield platform that it's been teasing us with lo these many months, with its speed, power and promised battery savings that come from the Atom SOC.

Smartphone? Tablet? As always, we'll be there to bring you the whole thing as it happens. Set your calendars, folks!

Love and Happiness | Psychology Today

Happiness is best achieved through living an ethical life. A good life is a happy life. Good relations and taking responsibility not only make a happy life possible; they are happiness itself.

?But good people aren?t always happy. Why? Because goodness is an ideal state; it something you aim at, a kind of moving target. Happiness may be achieved but mostly it is occasional and fleeting. Conditions change and you aim again. Even the best archer doesn?t always hit the bull?s-eye. External conditions make it easier to achieve happiness. For example, an archer is more likely to hit a target if she uses the best-made bow than if she used a poorly made bow. No one, though, has everything that is needed?peaceful times, perfect health, a just society, loving parents, caring teachers.

No one can be happy all the time. But you can approach happiness with a good family, a good friend, a good government, good enough possessions, and adequate health. The great archer with the inadequate bow will oust the incompetent archer with the latest and best equipment.

I accept Goethe?s comment, "I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration, I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis is escalated or de-escalated, and a person is humanized or de-humanized. If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming."

Happiness, while not possible all the time, is possible at least some of the time. More than that, you can look back on your life and say that you were happy. Happiness is the overall assessment of your life, not the episodic moments. It?s Seurat?s pointillist picture from a distance, not the dots up close.

True happiness is the gentle pulling away from yourself by which you find a better self that can prosper. Loving the right things and loving them in the right way is the key. Ethical relationships make it more likely than not that as you look back on your life you will be able to say, ?I have lived a good life.?

Still, there is something about happiness that is independent of virtue. This is the happiness that is found in the joy of existence, the delight in simply being. This can be experienced either with others or in moments of solitude. Which form it takes, I suppose, is a matter of temperament. Individual dispositions and upbringing will lead people to find happiness in different ways. Some are, by nature, social, others more solitary. I may find happiness in the company of people while you may prefer a walk in the woods. You may enjoy the quiet of a good book, or perhaps it is the conviviality of the dinner table you seek. Some love cities, others the countryside.

But whichever way you find happiness, it is always accompanied by love, for happiness is ultimately the love of life, the celebration of living. The mark of happiness is that you are sensitive to the world around you, that you acknowledge your dependence upon your surroundings and that you are filled with loving-kindness.

You want to take care of that which you love, and you are solicitous toward it. The person who finds happiness through love is the person who can be trusted to bring happiness to others. This is the meaning behind Lao Tzu?s aphorism, ?The person who loves the world as his own body may be entrusted with the empire.?

There are those who possess everything they claim to have wanted but still aren?t happy. They think they can be happy yet indifferent, happy while independent. The truth is the opposite: happiness requires gratitude and an acknowledgement of interdependence with that which is around you. More wealth doesn?t make you happier; deeper and better relations do.

The places of happiness are infinite, the sources never-ending. And you inhabit those places not because they have been pursued but because you have opened your heart and have allowed them in.

Pick 6: Unforgettable Openers

One game can change a season in college football ? and it could happen in Game 1.

This season starts with a long weekend of games, kicking off Thursday night and ending Monday night. While the schedule is mostly packed with powerhouse-vs.-pushover tilts, there are some intriguing matchups: Alabama against Michigan, Boise State at Michigan State, South Carolina against Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech facing Virginia Tech.

But as Appalachian State reminded us all a few years back, you never know when a classic is about to break out.

That unforgettable upset makes this Pick 6 of memorable season-openers in college football history.

___

USC 42, ALABAMA 21, Sept. 12, 1970.

The Sam "Bam" Cunningham Game. At this point the legends have probably overtaken the reality, but this much is true: USC fullback Sam Cunningham, who is black, ran for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries at Legion Field in Birmingham against an all-white Crimson Tide team.

Alabama coach Bear Bryant had already taken steps to integrate the Crimson Tide after years of segregation. But Cunningham and the Trojans made it clear to anyone who was uncomfortable with that plan that if Alabama didn't start recruiting more black players it would not remain a football power.

___

UCLA 20, NEBRASKA 17, Sept. 9, 1972

The Cornhuskers were No. 1 and hadn't lost a game since 1969. The Bruins were coming off a two-win season.

Led by Mark Harmon, yes the actor, running a newly installed wishbone offense, UCLA snapped Nebraska's 32-game unbeaten streak. Harmon passed for 65 yards and ran for 71 and a touchdown at the Los Angeles Coliseum and Efren Herrera hit a 29-yard field goal to provide the winning margin with 20 seconds left.

___

GEORGIA 16, TENNESSEE 15, Sept. 6, 1980

Herschel Walker's first game. And on his carry, he brought the house down.

With the Bulldogs down 15-2, Walker ran 16 yards for a touchdown, busting through Tennessee tacklers and running over safety Bill Bates.

The longtime great Georgia play-by-play man Larry Munson famously said what everybody else was thinking: "My God, a freshman!"

____

MIAMI 31, FLORIDA STATE 0, Sept. 3, 1988.

Bobby Bowden's first preseason No. 1 team was loaded, with Deion Sanders, LeRoy Butler and Sammie Smith, just to name a few.

And the Hurricanes ripped the overconfident Seminoles to shreds, behind a ferocious defense anchored by Cortez Kennedy and Russell Maryland up front.

Florida State didn't lose again and finished No. 3 in the country. Miami lost only once, a 31-30 defeat at eventual national champion Notre Dame, and finished No. 2.

___

THE CITADEL 10, ARKANSAS 3, Sept. 5, 1992.

This was no way to move into a new conference. The Razorbacks' first game as a member of the Southeastern Conference was one of the low points in program history.

After losing to the I-AA (now FCS) team from South Carolina, Arkansas coach Jack Crowe resigned the next day.

___

NORTHWESTERN 17, NOTRE DAME 15, Sept. 2, 1995.

Northwestern was the worst. Simple as that. For years, the Wildcats epitomized football futility.

There was no reason to expect anything different in 1995. Then the Wildcats, a 28-point underdog, beat the ninth-ranked Fighting Irish at Notre Dame Stadium.

Northwestern had not opened the season with a victory since 1975. The Wildcats were far from done, going on to win the Big Ten and play in the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1949.

____

APPALACHIAN STATE 34, MICHIGAN 32, Sept. 1, 2007.

The day college football fans became acquainted with Boone, N.C. The Mountaineers were a Division I-AA (now FCS) powerhouse but still nobody gave them a chance at the Big House against the No. 5 team in the country.

The Wolverines had Chad Henne, Mike Hart and Jake Long on a powerful offense, but the defense was helpless to stop Armanti Edwards, Dexter Jackson and App State's spread offense.

Appalachian State kicked a 24-yard field goal with 1:11 left to go ahead and Corey Lynch blocked Michigan's 37-yard attempt as time expired and for the first time a ranked major college team had lost to a team from the lower tier of Division I.

Militants attack Pakistan army post, kill 9 troops

(AP) ? Taliban militants attacked an army post near the Afghan border in Pakistan's northwest, killing nine soldiers, a military official said Wednesday.

The attack occurred in the South Waziristan tribal area, once the main stronghold for the Pakistani Taliban, and was a reminder of the threat posed by insurgents despite numerous military offensives against them.

The military launched a large offensive against militants there in 2009, but insurgents still operate in the area and periodically stage attacks.

In addition to the nine soldiers killed, several others were wounded in the attack on the post near Ghatbadr village in the Shakai Valley, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. The attack started just before midnight and lasted for several hours, he said.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. The group's spokesman, Ahsanullah Ahsan, claimed they killed 12 soldiers and beheaded some of them.

The differing accounts could not be independently verified.

The military has conducted offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in six of the seven areas that make up Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal region along the Afghan border.

The U.S. said recently that Pakistan plans to launch an operation against the Pakistani Taliban in the last major militant sanctuary in region, North Waziristan. But Pakistani military officials have downplayed the comments, saying they plan to slowly increase pressure against militants in North Waziristan rather than launch a sweeping offensive.

Many Pakistani Taliban militants fled to North Waziristan and other parts of the tribal region following the army operation in South Waziristan in 2009.
