While Away for 25 Years Hovde Misses the Importance of
Wisconsin?s Dramatic Tax Cuts, Welfare Reform, Job Creation and School Choice in MJS Editorial Board Meeting
??it is time instead of having speeches of what I (Thompson) did twenty years ago, and to come out and/or saying ?I?m the one leading in the polls? and?come and talk what he plans to do for the country.? ? Eric Hovde
A statement from Tommy Thompson for U.S. Senate spokesman Brian J. Nemoir in regards to the dismissive and disrespectful comments Republican primary rival Eric Hovde made during his July 18, 2012 Editorial Board visit with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:
?There?s a simple reason Eric Hovde doesn?t want to talk about the past. While Tommy Thompson was creating jobs and cutting taxes, Eric Hovde was cutting deals in Washington to profit from taxpayer bailouts,? said Nemoir. ?Hovde wants to hide that he?s spent the last 24 years in Washington trading on his cozy government relationships to make a quick buck off of the American taxpayer.?
Hovde?s own marketing material boasts he built his business on ?government-assisted transactions? in the bailout sector and not the private sector as he purports:
?Hovde financial built its foundation in the late 1980?s and early 1990?s on government-assisted transactions.? ? Hovde Industry Update, Nov. 2008 Vol XXII Issue III
For Hovde, who was living in Washington, DC during Thompson?s tenure, the contrast couldn?t be greater:
While Thompson was fighting Democrat legislatures and using his veto pen 1900 times to reduce the size of government, Hovde was in Washington, DC urging his clients to ?Let Uncle Sam Finance your Acquisitions.? (http://www.thehovdegroup.com/resources/publications)
While Thompson was providing tax relief to working families and delivering the largest property tax cut in the history of Wisconsin, Hovde was betting against homeowners and American companies and profiting when they failed.
And while Thompson cut the income tax rate three times, Hovde was echoing Tammy Baldwin by calling for a Buffett Rule-like tax hike increase in a 2009 CNBC interview.
?Tommy Thompson worked to deliver landmark victories for conservatives such as School Choice and welfare reform, while creating 740,000 new jobs in the process,? Nemoir said. ?Eric Hovde?s dismissive comments about these historic successes demonstrates that he?s been part of the problem in Washington.?
