Colon Cancer | Natural Treatments & Remedies

the (mostly) preventable cancer

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer. But that is mostly because we are very lax about getting screenings for this cancer or taking steps to avoid getting it in the first place. Let?s explore how this cancer gets started and you will see that you have a great deal of control over whether or not you get this cancer, also known as colorectal cancer.

Like so many cancers, colon cancer has few to no symptoms in the early stages. And what symptoms you might have are also common to other problems, like abdominal discomfort, change in bowel habits or blood in the stool. It would be really easy to ignore these symptoms or never connect them to anything as serious as cancer! It also attacks older people, those over 50 (we don?t consider 50 as being ?older? but that?s another matter). If you have a family history of this cancer, if you have been diagnosed with recurring inflammatory bowel disease or adenomatous polyposis, if you are obese, you are at a higher risk of getting colorectal cancer. Dietary factors also come into play with colon cancer, something all of us can control, which is what makes this cancer preventable. Diets high in fat, especially animal fat from beef, and low in fiber are contributory factors along with lack of the vitamin folate, calcium and minerals coupled with a sedentary lifestyle create the perfect storm for colorectal cancer. Additional lifestyle choices can make a bad situation worse, like smoking (we know already that smoking is just plain a bad idea on every level) and heavy drinking of alcohol. These things may not be easy to give up if you are prone to them, but it would be great if you made every effort possible to so do. Enlist all the help available to you if necessary.

I remember the first person I ever knew who got
colon cancer. She fit perfectly into the profile
above. She ended up with a colostomy bag.
This was well before current treatments such
as removing the part of the intestine where the
tumors are and reconnecting the good parts
of the intestines, being very careful not to
disturb or even come in contact with the tumor
to avoid releasing cancer cells into the blood
stream. But back to my friend? she was
mostly bedridden for the rest of her life. Her
room was next to my house and she lived there
nearly exclusively for the last two years of her
life. If I was outside, she would visit with me
through her window. I never saw visitors
there after she had the colostomy. I think
she lived a very lonely last couple of years.
It made an indelible impression on me!

This cancer manifests itself through polyps found in the colon walls, usually as clusters. Because it is asymptomatic in the early stages, if you are over 50, you just must get these screenings. OK, we know that you?d rather walk barefoot through burrs than have a colonoscopy. About the only thing more unpleasant than having this screening is actually coping with colon cancer! Or getting three root canals on the same day. Actually, there are a lot of things more unpleasant. It?s the thought of doing it that keeps us from acting! To take the worry out of the process, check with your doctor for complete information on what to expect, the dietary changes you will need to make in the days prior to the screening, what to do about medications you may be taking. Making these changes, such as eating a lighter diet for a few days, will make things go more smoothly (so to speak!). And when you show up for your screening, you will get to take a very nice long nap during the procedure. So be sure you have someone ready to take you home.

And make some lifestyle changes if you fall into the high risk category. You don?t have to get colon cancer and it?s a rather nasty cancer to have to deal with. Well, all of them are, so do what you can to prevent colon and other cancers. The American Cancer Society estimates that 50,000 people a year die of colon cancer. Don?t be one of them!
