The first semester of the 2012/13 school year is almost over. Parent Week was an excellent occasion with over 150 parents attending the four days of fun activities, information sharing and beautiful weather. The Kodai Open Basketball saw our students compete at a very high level and in a very pleasing manner. Congratulations to the boys for their success in the final and commiserations to the girls who played every match valiantly.
At the Residential Forum held during Parent Week I mentioned the following:
Residential Curriculum
Residential curriculum is an important reality for Boarding schools in the 21st Century. Much of our residential curriculum is based on the following Residential Life values:
- Safety
- Empowerment
- Community
- Diversity
- Responsibility
- Accountability
- Empathy
Students? non-academic and social skills are enriched ? preparing them to navigate life during and after High School. The need for basics of study skills, need for balanced life style including sleep, nutrition and physical activity are taught and reinforced. Healthy relationships, finance management and planning for the future are especially important for Senior Boarders. Spiritual development, self-reflection and self-evaluation are imperative. Topics included for discussion and awareness include: self-respect; body image; and identifying labels placed on people especially females.
Most of all, the focus on the well-being of each Residential Student is of major importance to ensure inclusivity, character building and above all resilience.
Parents Visiting
We are very supportive of parents who want to visit their son/daughter in Kodai during the school year. We do however ask that you advise the Residential Parent of your intended visit 48 hours in advance and upon arrival, contact the Residential Parent by phone.? If taking your son/daughter out of the Residence overnight, the Online Leave
Please note: The Parent Portal and Password must only be known/used by parents.?Application process must be used.
Pocket Money
A reminder that the following maximum amount of pocket money is issued monthly :
- Grade 4/5:????? ?Rs?? 400
- Grade 6/7/8: ? Rs?? 600
- Grade 9/10:???? Rs?? 800
- Grade 11/12:?? Rs? 1000
Parents who have already indicated a limit can of course maintain this amount. Unless parents specify an amount the maximum amount will be issued on a monthly basis.? Please notify your son?s/daughter?s?Residential Parent re concerns/changes with regards to pocket money.
Important: It has been noted that against school policy, some parents have supplied large amounts of cash and or access to cash by ATM card. This presents a number of potential problems including theft and ability to? purchase inappropriate and un ? necessary items/materials. I would ask parents to read?our school guidelines with regard to money, purchases etc. and to please support school policy.
The Australian Boarding ?Schools Association
We are a member of this organization because it is of utmost importance to KIS in terms of

Two KIS staff attended the ABSA Conference held in Australia on September 30 to October 4 along with the Dean and the Principal. More information will be forthcoming from this conference but there were delegates from not only Australia but also the UK, USA, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
Stop Press!
KIS will host the first ABSA-I (Australian Boarding Schools Association ? India) Conference in March 2013.
Online Leave Process
As the Christmas Break is nearly upon us I would like to remind parents of the following:
All leave must be applied for Online: http://online.kis.in? via the Parent Portal.? This is very important! Do not rely on email for approval. We require the Parent to request leave and to provide all details so that the Residential Parent can approve the leave.? Long Weekend leave and End of Semester leave must match the school times and dates.? Please check the calendar on the KIS Website for school dates.
If you have any difficulties with online access please contact ISM@kis.in
The Residential Parent
The first point of contact between the parent of a Boarding Student and the school is generally the Residential Parent. ?This person represents you the parent and the school in caring for your child.
They are very important and work very hard. There should be regular communication between the Residential Parent and you. The Residential Parent has an email address:? e.g. Bruton@kis.in??and a mobile (cell) phone number and a Land Line Number. They will be the first to communicate to you any concerns or issues that may arise. They approve normal Leave and Long Weekend Leave which have set dates/times.
???????? N.B. (Special Leave and Emergency Leave is directed to the Principal for approval)
Please note that the Residences open on Monday January 7 2013 not as published in the printed school calendar.
Enjoy the coming break with your sons/daughters.
