Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: Help ...

Currently Being Moderated

Hi guys, my wife and I have a problem? and can't figure it out. We like each other even though we argue a lot,? and we would like to start a family, ideally.

But... we both want totally different things in life and don't see how? both of us can be happy. I'll explain briefly and I'd love to hear your? advice.

I'm 30, my wife is 33, and we've been married 2.5 years. My wife is a? career woman and is very successful and contented in her career -? literally living her dream. She loves her job, pays very well, and it's? what she always wanted to do.

The problem is that 1) she works every hour God sends - 7 days a week? until late at night with lots of travel which means we have hardly any? quality time together, and 2) her job means that we have to live in a? city that I hate to live in and am desperate to leave.

The issue is that I'm miserable in my job and where we live and years? for another life and to live somewhere else, and also am concerned about? how we could possibly raise a child with my wife working so hard. She's? made it clear she doesn't want to take time off work and would rather I? stayed at home to look after the baby, or get a nanny.

So what do I do given that 1) I feel committed to the marriage and want? to make it work, but 2) My wife's dream job and career-mindedness means I? am living in a place I can't stand but can't leave, and 3) it looks? like I'll be forced to stay home full time to look after our future? child because my wife is committed to her job.

I don't see a solution because it's not like I'm going to ask my wife to? forget her career that she loves and be a stay at home mom.

If we were just engaged, we'd have broken it off by now, which we've? both agreed, but what now that we're married? Can two people break up a? young marriage and still be friends because we both have irreconcilable? lifestyles? What do I do? What's reasonable to ask her to do and what's? reasonable to expect of myself???
