Five minutes of film fame | Local | Entertainment | The London Free ...

A group of local London writers, actors, and filmmakers came together for the first annual Five-Minute Film Festival.

The two-day event. which kicked off Saturday at the Old East Studios on 755 Dundas St., is a grassroots festival, organized by local filmmaker Mike Tyrell.

The idea behind the film festival is to bring together the growing community of London filmmakers and provide an opportunity for networking and collaboration.

For Tyrrell, the objective of the festival is to bring filmmakers together and showcase films in a constructive, non-competitive environment.

?My goal for this festival is to give writers, directors, and actors a network, an opportunity to create short films and get feedback from audiences,? he said.

The festival showcased seven films from five different filmmakers and explored a range of genres ranging from black comedy, drama, a documentary, as well as a vintage slide show from the 1920s.

Steven Lang, an aspiring writer and director, screened his very first film Motel Charlie, a horror flick, at the festival this year. He says organizers of the festival helped him get in contact with local actors and producers and gave him the opportunity to explore the field of filmmaking.

?They basically helped me direct my first film. They helped me get in contact with actors and cinematographers and really guided me through the process,? explained Lang. ?I was lucky to be surrounded by a talented team,? he added.

Lang hopes to expand his career as a filmmaker and says he is looking to submit Motel Charlie to film festivals worldwide.

?My ultimate goal is to entertain audiences with something that is thought-provoking and hopefully scare them a little too,? he says.

Tyrrell considers the festival a growing project and is planning to hold another film showcase some time next February.

?As a grassroots festival, we just want to bring local filmmakers together," he said. "We hope it gets bigger and better with time."
