Dutch art thieves were no 'Ocean's 11' team

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? In Hollywood movies, heists usually feature criminals who plan meticulously and use high-tech equipment to avoid detection. But the thieves who snatched seven paintings by Picasso, Matisse and Monet worth millions from a gallery in Rotterdam appear to have taken a less glamorous approach, relying mostly on speed and brute force.

In other words, the theft from the Kunsthal exhibition on avant-garde art was more "smash and grab" than "Ocean's 11."

Dutch police said Wednesday they had no suspects in the case, the largest art heist in the country for more than a decade, though an appeal to witnesses had produced more than a dozen tips for investigators to follow up.

As questions arose about security at the museum, its director, Emily Ansenk, rejected criticism of the facility's safeguards. Speaking at a news conference Tuesday evening, she defended Kunsthal's security as "state of the art" and noted that insurance companies had agreed to insure it.

And yet the thieves got away. The paintings they took are estimated to be worth roughly $100 million if sold at auction.

Experts said the structure and location of the museum, which was designed by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, may have attracted criminals.

"Speaking as a museum-goer, it's fantastic," museum security expert Ton Cremers said. "Speaking as a security expert, it's a total nightmare."

The gallery is located along a large road that leads to a roundabout, less than a mile away, connecting highways heading in three directions. The display space where the paintings once hung is a large square area, at ground level, visible from outside through glass walls.

Though police and the museum have declined to discuss aspects of the heist that might help thieves, the main details of what happened are clear.

The break-in occurred at around 3 a.m. Tuesday, police say, after someone triggered an alarm.

Investigators have focused on an emergency exit behind the building. The exit connects directly to the main exhibition hall, with paintings hung just a few yards away. Tire tracks can still be seen in the grass behind the building leading away from the exit. Police on Tuesday dusted the exit for fingerprints and took samples of the tire prints.

The paintings were yanked from the walls, leaving only white spaces and broken hanging wires dangling behind.

Officers were on the scene within five minutes of the alarm being triggered, according to museum director Ansenk, but the thieves were already gone.

Police spokesman Henk van der Velde said Wednesday that 25 officers have been assigned to the case, but the getaway car has not been found and there are no suspects. Agents were reviewing videotape from museum cameras.

It is unknown what will happen to the paintings if the thieves are not caught.

The thieves may "wake up and realize they can't sell the paintings easily" now that museums around the world have been alerted to their theft, said Chris Marinello, of the Art Loss Register.

But the thieves may also sell them on the black market for a fraction of their true value, or try to extract money from insurers in exchange for returning them.

Anthony Roman, a New York-based security analyst, said the Kunsthal's level of defenses appeared so basic as to be "astounding," given the value of the art it was housing. He said an alarm system alone would never be enough to stop criminals.

Thieves "learn the distance the police have to travel," he said. "They understand the mechanism and the amount of time between when the alarm goes off and the time of a physical presence of law enforcement."

Security expert Cremers said the museum was not at fault for relying on cameras and motion detectors, rather than human guards. Having guards on site is costly, and they would be instructed not to confront robbers during a break-in anyway.

"The only thing they can do is call police," he said.

Cremers said the museum should have looked at ways to slow potential thieves down. That might have prevented them from attempting to break in in the first place, or at least limited the size of their haul.

He said the paintings should have been hung inside behind a second makeshift wall with doors, creating a "box within a box" in the gallery. In addition, the museum could have set up a barrier or fence preventing cars from being able to drive up right to the emergency doors.

"I'm sure they'll be looking at that now," he said.

Later Wednesday, museum spokeswoman Mariette Maaskant confirmed that the museum was installing stone planter boxes big enough to block cars "as an extra security measure."

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: Help ...

Hi guys, my wife and I have a problem? and can't figure it out. We like each other even though we argue a lot,? and we would like to start a family, ideally.

But... we both want totally different things in life and don't see how? both of us can be happy. I'll explain briefly and I'd love to hear your? advice.

I'm 30, my wife is 33, and we've been married 2.5 years. My wife is a? career woman and is very successful and contented in her career -? literally living her dream. She loves her job, pays very well, and it's? what she always wanted to do.

The problem is that 1) she works every hour God sends - 7 days a week? until late at night with lots of travel which means we have hardly any? quality time together, and 2) her job means that we have to live in a? city that I hate to live in and am desperate to leave.

The issue is that I'm miserable in my job and where we live and years? for another life and to live somewhere else, and also am concerned about? how we could possibly raise a child with my wife working so hard. She's? made it clear she doesn't want to take time off work and would rather I? stayed at home to look after the baby, or get a nanny.

So what do I do given that 1) I feel committed to the marriage and want? to make it work, but 2) My wife's dream job and career-mindedness means I? am living in a place I can't stand but can't leave, and 3) it looks? like I'll be forced to stay home full time to look after our future? child because my wife is committed to her job.

I don't see a solution because it's not like I'm going to ask my wife to? forget her career that she loves and be a stay at home mom.

If we were just engaged, we'd have broken it off by now, which we've? both agreed, but what now that we're married? Can two people break up a? young marriage and still be friends because we both have irreconcilable? lifestyles? What do I do? What's reasonable to ask her to do and what's? reasonable to expect of myself???

New Study Shows HPV Shot Doesn't Encourage Sexual Activity in Girls 0 5

sexual activity in girls is not increased by hpv shot according to study iStockphoto/Thinkstock

Preteen girls who received the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine were no more likely than unvaccinated girls to get pregnant, develop sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), or seek birth-control counseling.

These were the findings of a new study, discounting concern that HPV vaccination encourages promiscuity, reported USA Today.

HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer. NY Daily News said the HPV vaccine can help prevent cervical cancer, but it's most effective when given to girls before they become sexually active.

CBS News stated that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend HPV vaccination for preteen girls and boys at age 11 or 12. Three doses are generally recommended over six months.

But less than half of girls eligible receive it, wrote MSN.com. Reuters said that one of the arguments against HPV vaccination is that it gives preteens a false sense of security when it comes to sex.

The new study seems to supports evidence to the contrary. The study involved girls enrolled in an Atlanta Kaiser Permanente health plan.

Reuters wrote that out of 1,398 girls who were 11 or 12 when they saw their doctors in 2006 and 2007, 493 got at least one dose of the HPV vaccine.

CBS News said that the researchers didn't ask girls about having sex. Instead they looked at sexual activity ?markers? after vaccination against the sexually transmitted human papillomavirus.

Specifically, they examined up to three years of records whether girls sought birth control counseling; tests for STDs or pregnancy; or became pregnant.

Very few of the preteen girls who got the shots had done any of those over the next three years, wrote Associated Press. Moreover, the study found no difference in rates of those markers compared with unvaccinated girls.

Based on primary care visit records, 107 of the girls were given a pregnancy test through 2010, and 55 were tested for chlamydia. Girls who did or didn't get the HPV vaccine were equally likely to be tested for both, said Reuters.

'The Bachelor' Lawsuit: Judge Dismisses Television Show's Discrimination Case

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A federal judge on Monday dismissed a case filed by two black men who claimed ABC's "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" discriminated against casting participants of color.

U.S. District Court Judge Aleta Trauger's ruling states that casting decisions by the network and the series' producers are protected by the First Amendment and the case should not continue.

Nathaniel Claybrooks and Christopher Johnson sued the network in April, claiming their bids to appear on "The Bachelor" were never given serious consideration. They claimed the show and its spinoff "The Bachelorette" discriminated against nonwhite participants.

Trauger's ruling calls the plaintiffs' efforts "laudable" but says the lawsuit is aimed at regulating the show's content, which is forbidden under the First Amendment.

"Ultimately, whatever messages `The Bachelor' and `The Bachelorette' communicate or are intended to communicate ? whether explicitly, implicitly, intentionally, or otherwise ? the First Amendment protects the right of the producers of these shows to craft and control those messages, based on whatever considerations the producers wish to take into account," Trauger wrote.

ABC lauded the ruling, saying, "We felt from the onset this case was completely without merit and we are pleased the Court has found in our favor."

An email sent to attorney Byron Perkins, who represented Claybrooks and Johnson, was not immediately returned.

At the time of the lawsuit's filing, all of the men given star billing in the first 16 seasons of "The Bachelor" were white. Through seven seasons of "The Bachelorette," two male Hispanic contestants were selected winners and the rest were white.

TEXT-S&P summary: Thai Beverage Public Co. Ltd.

(The following statement was released by the rating agency)

===============================================================================

Summary analysis -- Thai Beverage Public Co. Ltd. ----------------- 15-Oct-2012

===============================================================================

CREDIT RATING: BBB/Watch Neg/-- Country: Thailand

Primary SIC: Malt beverages

===============================================================================

Credit Rating History:

Local currency Foreign currency

15-Jan-2007 BBB/-- BBB/--

===============================================================================

Rationale

The rating on Thai Beverage Public Co. Ltd. (Thai Bev) reflects the company's

dominant domestic market position in spirits, and high and stable cash flows.

Thai Bev's geographic concentration in Thailand, the company's still weak

performance in its beer division, and a growth strategy that may translate

into more aggressive financial policies partly offset these strengths.

Thai Bev's debt-funded acquisition of a 29% stake in Singapore-based

conglomerate Fraser & Neave Ltd. (F&N: not rated) for approximately Singapore

dollar 3.6 billion could adversely affect the company's credit profile, in our

opinion. We are still seeking more clarity about the company's plan to reduce

its debt over the next 24 months, its dividend policy, and the likelihood of

further debt-funded acquisitions. We will also assess the credit implications

for Thai Bev of any future related-party transactions between the company and

related party TCC Group (TCC: not rated). TCC offered to purchase the 69.5% it

does not own in F&N in September 2012.

Thai Bev's EBITDA of Thai Baht (THB) 14.6 billion for the six months ended

June 30, 2012, was about 60% of our full-year expectation. The company's

performance in spirits was stronger than we anticipated, with EBITDA margin of

about 27%, compared with our full-year expectation of 24%-25%. The

contribution of newly-acquired Serm Suk's operations also supported Thai Bev's

performance because of stronger-than-anticipated margin. Higher sales volumes

triggered a 22% increase in EBITDA for Thai Bev's beer division, although

higher marketing expenses weighed on the second-quarter performance. We still

expect the beer division to break-even in 2012.

Liquidity

Thai Bev has "adequate" liquidity, as defined by our criteria. We expect the

company's liquidity sources to cover its liquidity needs by about 1.2x over

the next 12 months. Our liquidity assessment incorporates the following

factors and assumptions:

-- Liquidity sources include our expectation of funds from operations of

THB18 billion-THB20 billion and a cash balance of about THB3.9 billion as of

June 30, 2012.

-- Liquidity sources also include about THB4.5 billion in committed

credit lines from domestic financial institutions. Thai Bev also has access to

more than THB35 billion in uncommitted credit lines, but we do not capture

those in our liquidity calculation given their uncommitted nature.

-- Over the next 12 months, liquidity needs include THB6.5 billion of

debt due and our estimate of working capital requirements of THB2 billion-THB3

billion.

-- Liquidity needs also include maintenance capital expenditure of THB4

billion and our expectations of dividend payments of about THB10 billion.

-- We expect liquidity sources to remain positive even if EBITDA declines

by 15%.

We assess Thai Bev's access to the Thai capital markets as strong, given its

long-standing banking relationships and strong domestic credit standing.

We do not include the cost of Thai Bev's F&N acquisition in our liquidity

needs. The company expects to finance this acquisition using bridge financing

from a number of financial institutions.

CreditWatch

We expect to resolve our CreditWatch placement with negative implications

within the next month. This will be after we have a better understanding of

Thai Bev's financial policy, particularly its dividend payout; more clarity

about the strategic intent of the acquisition, including potential synergies;

and the credit implications of any potential related party transactions

between Thai Bev and TCC.

We may lower the rating on Thai Bev if the company's deleveraging potential

reduces, such that we expect its debt-to-EBITDA ratio to remain above 3x over

the next 24 months.

We may affirm the rating if we expect Thai Bev's financial risk profile to

improve in the next 24 months. The ratio of debt to EBITDA at less than 2.5x

and the ratio of debt to debt plus equity lower than 40% by the end of 2014

could indicate such improvement.

Five minutes of film fame | Local | Entertainment | The London Free ...

A group of local London writers, actors, and filmmakers came together for the first annual Five-Minute Film Festival.

The two-day event. which kicked off Saturday at the Old East Studios on 755 Dundas St., is a grassroots festival, organized by local filmmaker Mike Tyrell.

The idea behind the film festival is to bring together the growing community of London filmmakers and provide an opportunity for networking and collaboration.

For Tyrrell, the objective of the festival is to bring filmmakers together and showcase films in a constructive, non-competitive environment.

?My goal for this festival is to give writers, directors, and actors a network, an opportunity to create short films and get feedback from audiences,? he said.

The festival showcased seven films from five different filmmakers and explored a range of genres ranging from black comedy, drama, a documentary, as well as a vintage slide show from the 1920s.

Steven Lang, an aspiring writer and director, screened his very first film Motel Charlie, a horror flick, at the festival this year. He says organizers of the festival helped him get in contact with local actors and producers and gave him the opportunity to explore the field of filmmaking.

?They basically helped me direct my first film. They helped me get in contact with actors and cinematographers and really guided me through the process,? explained Lang. ?I was lucky to be surrounded by a talented team,? he added.

Lang hopes to expand his career as a filmmaker and says he is looking to submit Motel Charlie to film festivals worldwide.

?My ultimate goal is to entertain audiences with something that is thought-provoking and hopefully scare them a little too,? he says.

Tyrrell considers the festival a growing project and is planning to hold another film showcase some time next February.

?As a grassroots festival, we just want to bring local filmmakers together," he said. "We hope it gets bigger and better with time."

Thousands rally for Pakistani girl shot by Taliban

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? Tens of thousands rallied in Pakistan's largest city Sunday in support of a 14-year-old girl who was shot and critically wounded by the Taliban for promoting girls' education and criticizing the militant group.

The demonstration in the southern city of Karachi was by far the largest since Malala Yousufzai and two of her classmates were shot on Oct. 9 while returning home from school in Pakistan's northwest.

The attack horrified people inside and outside Pakistan and sparked hope among some that it would prompt the government to intensify its fight against the Taliban and their allies.

But protests against the shooting have been relatively small until now, usually attracting no more than a few hundred people. That response pales in comparison to the tens of thousands of people who held violent protests in Pakistan last month against a film produced in the United States that denigrated Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

Demonstrations in support of Yousufzai ? and against rampant militant violence in the country in general ? have also been fairly small compared with those focused on issues such as U.S. drone attacks and the NATO supply route to Afghanistan that runs through Pakistan.

Right-wing Islamic parties and organizations in Pakistan that regularly pull thousands of supporters into the streets to protest against the U.S. have less of an incentive to speak out against the Taliban, who share their desire to impose Islamic law in the country ? even if they may disagree with some of the militant group's violent tactics.

Pakistan's mainstream political parties are often also more willing to harangue the U.S. than direct their people power against Islamist militants shedding blood across the country ? partly out of fear and partly because they rely on Islamist parties for electoral support.

One of the exceptions is the political party that organized Sunday's rally in Karachi, the Muttahida Quami Movement. The party's chief, Altaf Hussain, criticized both Islamic and other mainstream political parties for failing to organize rallies to protest the attack against Yousufzai.

He called the Taliban gunmen who shot the girl "beasts" and said the shooting was an attack on "the ideology of Pakistan."

"Malala Yousufzai is a beacon of knowledge. She is the daughter of the nation," Hussain told the audience by telephone from London, where he is in self-imposed exile because of legal cases pending against him in Pakistan. His party is the strongest in Karachi.

Many of the demonstrators carried the young girl's picture and banners praising her bravery and expressing solidarity.

Yousufzai earned the enmity of the Taliban for publicizing their behavior when they took over the northwestern Swat Valley, where she lived, and for speaking about the importance of education for girls.

The group first started to exert its influence in Swat in 2007 and quickly extended its reach to much of the valley by the next year. They set about imposing their will on residents by forcing men to grow beards, preventing women from going to the market and blowing up many schools ? the majority for girls.

Yousufzai wrote about these practices in a journal for the BBC under a pseudonym when she was just 11. After the Taliban were pushed out of the valley in 2009 by the Pakistani military, she became even more outspoken in advocating for girls' education. She appeared frequently in the media and was given one of the country's highest honors for civilians for her bravery.

The Pakistani Taliban said they carried out the shooting because Yousufzai was promoting "Western thinking." Police have arrested at least three suspects in connection with the attack, but the two gunmen who carried out the shooting remain at large.

The young girl was shot in the neck, and the bullet headed toward her spine. Doctors at a military hospital operated on her to remove the bullet from her neck, and she was put on a ventilator. Her condition improved somewhat on Saturday when she was able to move her legs and hands after her sedatives were reduced.

On Sunday, she was successfully taken off the ventilator for a short period and later reconnected to avoid fatigue, the military said. Doctors are satisfied she is making slow and steady progress and will decide whether to send her abroad for treatment.

The United Arab Emirates plans to send a specialized aircraft to serve as an ambulance for the girl in case doctors decide to send her abroad, the Pakistani ambassador to the country, Jamil Ahmed Khan, said Sunday.

Visas are being finalized for the air ambulance crew and six doctors who will accompany the flight, Khan told Pakistan's Geo TV. Arrangements have been made to treat the girl at three hospitals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, he said.

The UAE Embassy in Islamabad could not immediately be reached for comment.

No decision has yet been taken to send the girl abroad, but the air ambulance is part of the contingency plan, the Pakistani military said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has written letters to top political and religious leaders in Pakistan denouncing the attack on Yousufzai and asking them to help battle extremism in both countries, the president's office said in a statement issued late Saturday. Karzai wrote that he views the shooting as an attack on Afghanistan's girls as well.

Couples that Blog Together? : @ProBlogger

This guest post is by Jefferson and Michelle of See Debt Run.

Blogging with your significant other can be a very rewarding experience, as long as you communicate openly.

My wife and I started personal finance site See Debt Run in January of this year to document our journey out of debt, and to share the experiences that we had along the way.

When we decided to start See Debt Run, we agreed that our site should feature both of our voices equally, and we both pledged to work together to improve our financial situation and to work towards making the site a success. We never expected that this adventure would bring us even closer together.

Divide and conquer

Most people aren?t aware of how much work bloggers really have to do behind the scenes. Networking with peers, managing inquiries, researching keywords, and learning and implementing SEO best practices can all be just as time consuming as creating content. Having two people to tackle these tasks gives you the ability to divide and conquer, which can go a long way towards preventing?blogger?burnout (which happens to everyone).

Since I work full time, I am often unavailable during the day to respond to comments or handle any other blog issues that come up.? Because my wife stays at home with our one-year-old daughter, she can respond to comments or inquiries during the baby?s naptime, which is a major advantage.?

In the evenings, after the kids are in bed, we buckle down and take care of writing for the site, editing, and other blogging tasks.

During this time, we actually enjoy working side by side. While many married couple are probably spending their evenings watching television, my wife and I are instead collaborating together to build something, which is a reward in and of itself.

Lend a hand

The very best part about blogging with your spouse is the fact you have an editor who is available 100% of the time.

We agreed from the start that we would provide honest feedback to each other, and as such, we always read each other?s posts before they go up on the site. It isn?t unusual for my wife to suggest that I remake a section of one of my articles, or for me to suggest that she add a better transition between paragraphs in one of hers.

To keep the site running smoothly, we use a variety of tools to keep things straight.?We maintain a shared text file that we call the ?idea well.? ?Whenever we think of something that might make a good post, it gets added to the file, where either one of us are welcome to run with it. ?As these ideas turn into real posts, we maintain a shared calendar to keep track of which articles will be running and when.

The hour or two that we have before bed is not always enough time to get our articles completed and ready for publishing.? If one of us needs some time to write, the other is always willing to take the kids out to the playground, to clear the house of the normal distractions. ?

There have also been a few occasions since starting the blog that each of us has suffered a bit of writers? block, and when that has happened, the other was more than willing to step up and write up a few extra posts.

Use your voices, since you have more than one

From a writing perspective, I like to think that having two voices instead of one helps us appeal to a broader audience.

Logic might tell you that your readers want to connect with a single author, finding their perspective appealing, but with both of us posting regularly, we have the ability to make even more connections. My wife and I have very different writing styles, and as such, we appeal to different groups of people.

My wife is a dynamic storyteller who has a talent for using conversations in her writing. When she tells a story, she uses small details and raw emotions to help readers feel like they were right there with our family when the situation was going down.

I tend to write in a more traditional style, often backing up my articles with detailed examples and statistics. I have found the most success in writing articles that give career advice or offer specific tips about methods that we are using to improve our financial situation.

No two people have the exact same writing style. ?If you and your partner can each find your own unique voice, together you can find harmony.

Communication is key

To other couples out there that may be considering starting a?blog?together, I would wholeheartedly recommend it! Sustaining a successful a?blog?involves many long hours working on your computer, and having someone there with you goes a long way towards alleviating the monotony.

The most important advice that I can offer would be to make sure that you communicate openly. If you are considering making a change with the?blog?or discussing a new promotional opportunity, be sure to discuss it before moving forward.

Remember that you are full partners in this game, and you both have an equal stake in the site?s success. As long as you respect your partner and communicate openly, couple blogging can be a very rewarding experience.

Do you blog with your life partner?or another type of blogging partner? Tell your story in the comments.

Jefferson and his wife Michelle write at the personal finance?blog See Debt Run, where they document their family?s journey to financial sanity. They write about frugal parenting, money making opportunities, career advice, and more.

Egypt standoff between president, prosecutor ends

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's top prosecutor reached an agreement with the country's president to keep his job on Saturday despite earlier attempts to remove him, ending a standoff that had prompted accusations of interference in judicial affairs.

President Mohammed Morsi had ordered Prosecutor General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud to step down last Thursday in an apparent bid to appease public anger over the acquittals of ex-regime officials accused of orchestrating violence against protesters last year.

Morsi had broad public support for removing Mahmoud, who was appointed under ousted president Hosni Mubarak. But the move created a backlash from angry judges, who saw the decision as infringement on the judiciary.

Egyptian law protects the prosecutor general from being fired by the president. To overcome that constraint, Morsi had asked Mahmoud to become ambassador to the Vatican. But Mahmoud refused to be reappointed.

Vice President Mahmoud Mekki told reporters after meeting the prosecutor that the president agreed to suspend the decision following a request from the country's Supreme Judicial Council.

After meeting Morsi and his advisers, Mahmoud told The Associated Press that "a misunderstanding" had been resolved.

Earlier Saturday, Mahmoud defied the order by entering his office in a downtown Cairo courthouse flanked by security and hundreds of judicial officials who came in his support.

Mekki said the procedures to reappoint Mahmoud have been stopped after the appeal by the Council. He said the decision was initially to avoid popular anger following the Wednesday acquittal of Mubarak loyalists over their alleged role in a turning point of the 2011 uprising, known as the "Battle of the Camel," when camels ridden Mubarak supporters charged into an opposition crowd.

Mekki dismissed accusations that Morsi was interfering in the judiciary. The move, he said, was to "protect the post" against criticism. In defense of the decision, Mekki said the presidency had announced the decision after initially understanding that Mahmoud had agreed to step down.

"There was confusion. The acceptance was not complete, was not clear," Mekki told reporters.

Mahmoud returned to his office after the meeting with Morsi. At a press conference later, hundreds of judges came out to congratulate him for retaining the job. Mahmoud said he had been threatened, a charge the presidency denies.

An independent daily's online headline read: "The judges win in the battle of the prosecutor general."

Ask Engadget: Should I replace my mouse with a graphics tablet?

DNP Ask Engadget Should I replace my mouse with a graphics tablet

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Whee!, which we guess probably isn't their real name, who is looking for a way to ditch their mouse. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm a web developer, and my typical day involves a lot of moving and clicking when testing stuff in the browser. I've been thinking about ditching my mouse, because when using it for long hours it gets very uncomfortable. As such, I'm eyeing up a Wacom tablet and using the pen input to mouse around -- but do you think it's a good idea? Thanks in advance!"

Our questioner wants to solve their wrist-pain woes, and it certainly seems like a reasonable enough idea to us. Plenty of tablets come with a mouse mode, so it's just down to the limits of your budget.

  • If you're just dipping your toes into the water, you can pick up a Genius device for around $60.
  • Wacom's Bamboo tablets occupy the mid-range, setting you back $80 for a 5.8-inch model, all the way up to $200 for the 8.5-incher.
  • If you're serious about making the change, then Wacom's Intuos5 hardware is a top-range option, with the 6.2-inch version starting at $200, running all the way to $800 for the 18-inch unit, or even spending big on one of the company's Cintiq units.
  • We've also been wondering if a touchscreen Ultrabook might be a better idea, letting your fingers do the walking to spare your aching forearms.

That said, perhaps the wider Engadget community has an even better tip, so if you've already made that leap, why not share your knowledge in the comments below?

Accidentally hit the gas? Nissan has your back.

Nissan has introduced 'emergency assist for pedal misapplication,' a feature that compensates when a driver accidentally hits the gas instead of the brake. The tool is specifically designed to reduce collisions in small spaces like garages and parking spots.?

By Richard Read,?Guest blogger / October 13, 2012

A man runs past a logo of Nissan Motor Co at the company's global headquarters in Yokohama, south of Tokyo, in this 2011 file photo. Nissan has introduced a feature that will allow cars to self-correct when a driver accidentally hits the gas pedal instead of the brake.

You've probably also heard of "Lane Assist", which lets drivers know when they've drifted out of their travel lane.

Now,?Nissan?has introduced something called "Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication". And yes, it's exactly what it sounds like: a high-tech tool that compensates when drivers accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake.

According to Nissan, this new feature is specifically designed to cut back on accidents in "parking lots and?other spaces where a car could collide with walls if a driver mistakenly depresses the accelerator instead of the brake pedal". We'd like to think that the technology will reduce potential run-ins with pedestrians and other?vehicles, too, though it's not yet clear that it will.

The system makes use of four cameras on?Nissan's?"Around View Monitor", paired with sonar sensors. Together, these gadgets detect when a vehicle is in a parking space and if there are walls in its path of travel. Though it doesn't automatically park or un-park vehicles, it can take over the accelerator and the brake if necessary to avoid a collision.

The "Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication?(with Carpark Detection Function)" is all part of Nissan's?Vision Zero?safety?plan, which has the very lofty goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and injuries from accidents. The Vision Zero plan has led to the creation of a "Safety Shield" for Nissan vehicles, which works to address safety shortcomings on vehicles and counter them during accidents.

While this technology sounds interesting and very useful, leading us one step closer toward fully autonomous vehicles, it's not going to appear on U.S. cars -- at least not anytime soon. It's scheduled to debut on the Nissan?Elgrand, a?luxury?van?available only in Japan and key Asian markets. That's a logical choice, since the Elgrand has been the guinea pig for much of Nissan's new safety equipment, and since the Elgrand's well-heeled owners probably don't mind shelling out for this sort of technology.

Does this kind of safety technology interest you? When it rolls out to vehicles in the U.S. and elsewhere, will you buy it? Drop us a line, or leave a note in the comments below.

Facebook Isn't Letting People See The 'Want' Button - Business Insider

Even though Facebook is actively and openly testing a "Want" button, chances are you won't be able to see it.

Intrigued since rumors flooded the internet earlier this summer, I wanted to see what the highly anticipated button looked like for myself.

I wanted to "Want" something.

Facebook is currently testing the feature with seven different retailers, so I went to Victoria Secret's web page to check it out. This is what I found:

Collect? But, I didn't want to collect, I wanted to want!

Confused, I went to the other six testing retailers (including Pottery Barn, Fab.com, and Michael Kors), but they all would only let me collect, too.

I called a Facebook spokesperson, wondering if it was something I was doing. But when I explained my wantless condition, she said, unsurprised, "Oh, that probably means you're in the Collect group."

You see, although everyone's eyes went to the "Want" button in Facebook's testing announcement, many overlooked that the social media giant is testing a "Collect" and a "Like" (yes, another "Like," for products not people) button, too.

Users are pre-selected to only be able to do one action.

"We're testing to see what does the best," she said. "Who's to say what we're going to do in the future." Facebook won't say whether it will launch just one, two, all three ... or none.

"As the test progresses you might be able to change, but they act exactly the same. It's just the actual word is just different."

Still determined to see a want button, I forced a healthy chunk of the office to go to the Victoria's Secret page to see what button popped up. Ten people I approached in a row were also in the "Collect" group, followed by two with "Like." (Yawn).

It wasn't until I got to Ashley Lutz, our retail reporter (appropriately enough), that I found someone in the "Want" group.

So chances are, if you're desperate to click the "Want" button, you're going to have to go through a handful of friends before you find it. And enjoy it while you can, because it could easily be scrapped if the other two actions yield a better performance.

Although, the "Collect" button actually appears to offer more features than "Want" or "Like." Taking a page out of Pinterest's e-book, you can place the products you're interested in in different categories like fashion, home, and shoes.

Strikeforce cancels Nov. 3 event, much to main eventer Daniel Cormier?s surprise

Strikeforce announced by press release today that their planned Nov. 3 event is canceled, and they won't be doing a fight until January of 2013. Injuries to main eventers Frank Mir and Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold forced this decision.

From the press release:

"Due to a series of injuries, we were forced to cancel the upcoming card on Nov. 3, but are already working to put together a stacked card in January," STRIKEFORCE CEO Scott Coker said.

"While we're disappointed with the cancellation, we are looking forward to an even bigger STRIKEFORCE event on SHOWTIME early next year," said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports.

This is the second straight cancellation of a Strikeforce event. They canceled a Sept. 29 event because lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez was injured. The promotion is planning to move forward with a January card that will be announced shortly.

The cancellation took Daniel Cormier by surprise. As the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix champ, he was supposed to fight Mir on the Nov. 3 card. After Mir was injured, Strikeforce tried unsuccessfully to find a replacement to fight Cormier.

"I wish somebody would have told me something," he told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani. "This is unbelievable. I'm very upset. I just want to be informed. That's all. I don't think that's asking for too much."

Now Cormier and the rest of the Strikeforce fighters need to wait to see if they'll be on the January card.
