Before Debate, Tough Crowds at the Practice
By PETER BAKER and ASHLEY PARKER
Published: September 28, 2012

WASHINGTON ? In a conference room at the Democratic headquarters, President Obama has been preparing for the debate next week, but the reviews of his staff are already in. Too long, they tell him. Cut that answer. Give crisper explanations. No one wants a professor; they want a president.

Hundreds of miles away in New England, Mitt Romney?s team has been working to make sure he avoids coming off as a scold. His sparring partner, Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, channeling Mr. Obama, has gone after him repeatedly, to the point of being nasty. The goal is to get Mr. Romney agitated and then teach him how to keep his composure, look presidential.

With more than 50 million people watching and the presidency at stake, the candidates will meet for their first debate on Wednesday at the University of Denver, and both are cramming like college students before an exam. But it is not enough to pore through the voluminous briefing books. Victory may come down to a single exchange, or a single impression, an answer that comes off as too edgy or, conversely, as too long-winded.

Mr. Obama?s team records his practices to sharpen his responses so that they connect on a more visceral level with the television audience. One of Mr. Romney?s aides calculated his words-per-minute rate in the primary campaign debates to break him of the habit of feeling that he needs to rattle off the most statistics.

Mr. Romney?s team has concluded that debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers that he has memorized and has been practicing on aides since August. His strategy includes luring the president into appearing smug or evasive about his responsibility for the economy.

Mr. Obama is not particularly fluid in sound bites, so his team is aiming for a workmanlike performance like his speech at the Democratic convention. He is looking to show that Mr. Romney would drive the country in an extreme ideological direction at odds with the interests of the middle class.

For both men, it is a chance to reintroduce themselves to the largest audience in the campaign to date. ?The debate at one level is almost a Zen moment ? who is this person?? said Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, who debated Mr. Romney during the Republican primary campaign. ?What?s the larger story? What are we watching? What?s the drama we?re watching??

As the candidates prepare, the first trick for Mr. Obama is finding time. His rehearsals have started late and ended early because of events like the tumult in the Middle East. He showed up at one practice just after speaking at a ceremony for the four Americans killed in Libya, and aides found that his mind was elsewhere.

?The ability to find solid blocks of time to do nothing but prepare for debate is almost impossible for a president,? said Dan Pfeiffer, the White House communications director. ?The world doesn?t wait for debate prep.?

The president plans to decamp on Sunday to Nevada for a less distracting couple of days of practice.

During preparations, fewer than a dozen advisers are in the room. Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts plays Mr. Romney. Aides press Mr. Obama about unemployment, taxes and foreign policy, and try to be ?as annoying as a White House correspondent,? as one put it. ?You want to push the button and see how he will react,? the aide said.

Mr. Obama is a practiced debater after participating in more than 20 during the Democratic primary campaign in 2008, followed by three during the general election. But this will be his first as an incumbent, presenting new challenges.

David Plouffe, the president?s senior adviser, watched debates back to Gerald R. Ford?s against Jimmy Carter with the sound down to understand how a challenger?s stature increases by sharing a stage with the president. Other research found that incumbents unaccustomed to being challenged generally lost the first debate to challengers being taken more seriously by the public than ever before.

Obama advisers are acutely aware that Mr. Romney used debates to dispatch Republican rivals one by one during the primary campaign. When they watched Mr. Romney?s recent interview with ?60 Minutes,? they noticed that his answers were succinct and well rehearsed, a sign of the hours he had invested.

The president?s advisers said they were less interested in one-liners and were focused instead on making Mr. Obama more accessible.

?He had a hard time getting every point across within the time limit,? Mr. Plouffe said of past debates. ?You are trying to make a case to the people, so you have to make sure your answers connect with people.?

Those who have gone up against Mr. Obama said he rarely stumbled over facts but needed to show he understood that voters were hurting.

?Show them personally that you care about them. Empathize,? said former Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who debated Mr. Obama in 2008. ?Take a page from Clinton?s book and say, ?I feel your pain,? or something like that.?

While advisers said Mr. Obama would present Mr. Romney as a dangerous alternative, the president has an incentive to avoid risks, given his lead in battleground states. As important as scoring points will be avoiding mistakes.

?The sale has been made,? said Neera Tanden, who ran debate preparations for Hillary Rodham Clinton against Mr. Obama in 2008 and is now leads the Center for American Progress, a liberal research group. ?He just needs to reaffirm it. He just needs to not get in the way.?

By contrast, Mr. Romney needs to change the dynamics of the race.

?The debates are very important,? said Kevin Madden, a senior adviser to Mr. Romney. ?We see it as an important opportunity to persuade those voters who haven?t yet decided that Governor Romney would take the country in a better direction.?

Mr. Romney has focused on going after Mr. Obama without looking too aggressive. He participated in 23 debates during the nomination process, including a pair in Florida in which he effectively destroyed Mr. Gingrich?s threat. But general election debates tend to be more sober than the food-fight-type confrontations of a primary season.

?He came in very, very aggressive, very well prepared and ready to stick with his pitch no matter what,? Mr. Gingrich said. ?That is a pretty good setup for Obama. The challenge he?s going to have is he?s essentially indicting Obama while standing next to him. He has to do it in a way that?s firm, respectful and pleasant.?

During rehearsals, Mr. Romney has tried lines of attack suggesting that Mr. Obama distorts the facts and sloughs off responsibility on others. Mr. Romney?s aides recall Mr. Obama?s tart ?you?re likable enough? line to Mrs. Clinton in 2008 and hope to goad him into a similarly churlish moment. Mr. Romney will win, the advisers said, if he can force Mr. Obama to come across as condescending or smug.

To prepare Mr. Romney, Mr. Portman has played Mr. Obama combatively, attacking Mr. Romney as a rich man who does not care about average Americans. Evidently, he has gotten under the candidate?s skin. ?We get the chance to debate one another, and after the hour and a half or so is over, I want to kick him out of the room,? Mr. Romney said recently.

True to reputation, Mr. Romney has practiced for months, starting in June in Utah, through three days this month in Vermont. Once, when a problem with a charter plane kept Mr. Romney out until after midnight, his adviser, Beth Myers, asked if he still wanted to practice the next day. ?Painful,? he e-mailed, ?but yes.?

All the practice in the world, though, may not matter if he cannot control the dialogue and keep Mr. Obama from throwing him off his plan.

?The governor?s done a great job of convincing people that the economy?s bad,? said Brett O?Donnell, a Republican debate coach who worked briefly for Mr. Romney. ?He?s got to do a better job of making the case that President Obama?s directly responsible for that. That?s got to be his focus. If it becomes about anything else, then I think the governor?s at a disadvantage.?

Romney campaigns in Pennsylvania despite state slipping away

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Republican candidate Mitt Romney raised money and slammed President Barack Obama's Middle East policy on Friday in a rare campaign appearance in Pennsylvania, a former swing state that he admitted was now difficult for him to win on November 6.

Once highly competitive, Pennsylvania has been tilting toward Obama for months and he leads polls by around eight percentage points.

Romney's campaign is now fighting to make sure battleground states like Ohio and Virginia do not go the way of Pennsylvania, as Obama opens a lead in national and some state polls.

"We really would shock people if early in the evening of November 6, it looked like Pennsylvania was going to come our way," Romney told a meeting of donors.

Closing his remarks, however, Romney proclaimed: "On November 6, I'm going to win Pennsylvania, and I'm going to become the next president."

The former Massachusetts governor is trying to stabilize his campaign to counter a drop in opinion polls after a lackluster voter reaction to the Republican convention and Romney's choice of running mate, Paul Ryan.

A secretly recorded video in which Romney disparaged 47 percent of U.S. voters as dependent on federal aid also set back the former business executive, and he now trails Obama by 44 percent to 50 percent in Friday's Gallup daily tracking poll.

Hitting home a common theme of his in recent days, Romney accused Obama of failing to lead in the Middle East and said the United States is "at the mercy of events" around the world.

Flanked by cadets, Romney targeted Obama at the Valley Forge Military Academy, his second speech to a military audience after addressing an American Legion post in Virginia on Thursday.

Seizing on a remark Obama made last weekend during an interview with CBS-TV's "60 Minutes" program, Romney charged that the Democrat does not have the seriousness to deal with events in the Middle East.

Obama had said there will be "bumps in the road" as the governments in the Middle East take different forms following the Arab Spring.

"I don't consider 20 or 30,000 people dying in Syria just a bump in the road," Romney said. "Or a Muslim Brotherhood president in Egypt a bump in the road. I don't consider the killing of our diplomats in Libya as a bump in the road. And I sure as heck don't consider Iran becoming nuclear a bump in the road."

Smith, Morris, Florence have huge QB days

West Virginia's Geno Smith, Baylor's Nick Florence and Miami's Stephen Morris were quarterbacks-gone-wild Saturday.

And each of them did something no major-college passer had done since 2009.

Smith threw for 656 yards and eight touchdowns against Baylor ? the game where Florence threw for 581 yards and five scores. And in the Hurricanes' win over North Carolina State, Morris threw for a school-record 566 yards and five touchdowns.

Combined, the trio's total passing was the equivalent of 1.02 miles.

According to STATS LLC, the last quarterback with at least 550 yards and five touchdowns in a game was Houston's Case Keenum against Southern Mississippi on Oct. 31, 2009.

Before that, the last do it was Texas Tech's Graham Harrell against Oklahoma State on Sept. 22, 2007.

Google Earth to Help Dive in 'The Great Barrier Reef'

Project Founder and Director Richard Vevers said the images would open up the reef to the world.

"99.95 per cent of people can't scuba dive, it allows so many people to access the oceans for the very first time," the Daily Telegraph quoted Vevers, as saying.

According to the paper, the project to map the reef is part of the Catlin Seaview Survey that was launched at Monterey, California (USA).

Vevers said that scientists will spend the next three years compiling a visual record of the world's reefs that will be explorable by everyone via Google Maps.

"We have a team in the Coral Sea at the moment doing three 2km surveys a day," he said.

"It's very much a critical time for reefs and we want to cover as much as we can in the next two to three years to create a global record," he added.

The project will survey shallow sections of the reef up to 30m and will also use diving robots to explore never-seen-before areas up to 100m below the surface, the paper said.

Practicing Yoga When Sick with Cold or Flu Can Aid Your Recovery

I am often asked if it is appropriate to practice yoga when sick with a cold or some sort of energy-zapping bug. Some experts are convinced that rest is the best medicine when not feeling well, but practicing a little bit of yoga when you are sick can be beneficial.

The following is an explanation of why yoga can help restore your health while you are fighting an illness.

Immune Boost

Yoga stimulates the immune system by flushing swollen lymph nodes and circulating white blood cells throughout the body. Gentle inversions such as downward dog help to create a small amount of pressure on the lymphatic system so fluids can flow freely and help the body fight infection.

The key point to remember is that too much yoga is not going to be beneficial. The body uses a lot of energy when it is sick, and stealing some of that energy so you can do a full yoga practice is not advised. Practice just a few poses, and make sure you have a lot of time to rest in between each pose. If your body is telling you to stop, honor its request and take a break.

Mood Enhancement

Feeling good physically is closely related to feeling good mentally and emotionally. Yoga helps both the mind and the body perk up and be cheerful. If feeling sick has snatched up your positive outlook, yoga poses that do not require a lot of energy, such as mountain pose or a seated spinal twist, are good choices to boost your mood. Just be sure and take it slow, because when you are sick a little bit will go a long way.

Detoxification

Toxins in the form of pathogens, a.k.a. germs, make us sick. It is up to our circulatory, excretory, and integumentary systems to help rid the body of these toxins. If our heart, kidneys, and sweat glands are doing their job, we can kick out these germs in no time.

Yoga stimulates all of the body?s systems. Rhythmic breathing, along with gentle movement, flushes our organs with oxygenated blood and nutrients. Stagnation only serves to delay the onset of healing, which is why it is important to keep the body moving and the body?s systems actively working.

As always, trust that your body knows best. Practice a few key poses with caution to stimulate your body, not to annihilate your health.

ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) ? Doctors may have another weapon in their battle against leukemia. It?s a drug called Plerixafor.

Plerixafor was originally intended to be a treatment for HIV. It didn?t work. But doctors found it was effective in stimulating healthy stem cells to move out of the bone marrow into the blood stream.? There, they could be collected more easily to use for stem cell transplants to treat Non-Hodgkins lymphoma and Multiple Myeloma.

Researchers at Washington University wanted to see if the drug would also work to encourage leukemic cells to move out of the protection of the bone marrow and into the blood stream, where they might be more susceptible to chemotherapy. Their study focused on AML, acute myeloid leukemia. Researchers combined Plerixafor with chemotherapy. The results were promising. The cancer cells not only moved into the blood stream but seemed to be more sensitive to the chemotherapy. The complete remission rate was 46 percent as opposed to the expected 25 to 35 percent for these patients.

Lead researcher, Dr. Geoffrey Uy says more and larger studies are needed to confirm their findings, but the results were encouraging enough that researchers are studying the use of Plerixafor to treat solid tumors such as breast and lung cancer.

We profiled a woman from Johnston City, Illinois who participated in the Plerixafor study. Kathie Ray had relapsed after one bout with AML. She achieved a second remission and went on to get a stem cell transplant using cells donated by her sister. Kathie has remained in remission from leukemia for the past three years.

Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? What We ...

As you enter the stock exchange, you may notice that there are a good deal of fine quality investments available for you and with this, you can right away turn your little investment into a massive fortune in a short time period. In the present years, market daytrading has been fast rising in appreciation and plenty of individuals became keen to bet with it. Nevertheless for you to make this occur, you want to meticulously understand the law of demand and supply to be able to think up secrets that may work for your own benefit. A good goal for you is to have 3 times more profit in place than what your maximum amount you are prepared to lose actually is. If you are new to stock exchange day-trading these are some things to help get going.

When it is slowing down and you spot that there are not as many customers, that's when you would like to sell. One zone of weakness for many with stock option daytrading is knowing when to get out. Don?t hold out thinking you can squeeze bigger profits out of it or you might finish up losing money at the end. While margins for most traders are generally around half of the worth in traders account, day traders can face levels as low as twenty five percent. This indicates that a trader can by we could say, $1000 worth of stock from an account of only $250. Tips for surviving and flourishing as a stock trader The 5 most typical secrets adopted by day traders who attempt to make are profit are * Trend following ? utilised by all trading firms this tactic presupposes that stocks that having been constantly increasing may continue to rise. * Playing reports ? this plan of action is to buy stock in a company that has just reported excellent news * Range Trading ? here's where stock which has been rising and falling is purchased close to the low price and sold as it hits the serious price range. Refusing to endure and correctly handle trades that do not work leads to trading blunders. It's the lack of ability to deal with the inescapable losing trade that causes traders to chop winning trades short, move stops in the middle of a trade, cling on to losing trades, average down, and fail to pull on the trigger on sound trade setups. Learning how to accept and cope with trading loss could be equally as important as making good trades.

You want to gain from the loss ( that's its price ), so get it down. Include how you viewed the market at the time and the way the market action and your signals seemed to meet the standards for a sound trade set up. So what does the ?true? jobless rate look like, when you dump the seasonal corrections, and you consider ALL classes of jobless and underemployed employees? How does 18.0% sound to you? That is right, the non-seasonally altered, ?true? jobless rate, including ALL classes of the un- or under-employed, is an enormous 18.0%. Guage the trade : Once the trading day is over, return to what you wrote and see what can be learned. And it increased by 0.9% from December 2009! That is miles away from the 9.7% released by the govt.

The information released earlier in the month would prefer you to believe the economy must be improving. Hopefully it is not something that malign. But if you glance at the real information, how could you doubtless decide that? How could you actually believe, after critically considering this info, the Economy is headed in the correct direction? So that the question then becomes, WHY does the governing body work out and release the information in this format? Are they intentionally deceiving the U.S.

Beer me 225x300 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Great news!?Today is National Drink Beer Day, so you?ve got a built-in excuse to go celebrate (you?re on your own the other 364 days of the year!) Some of my friends have no problem trying different types of beer (me neither) and that?s a good thing because our taste buds will never get bored. But, if you?re like many of my other friends who stick to the same style and brand of beer day in and day out, I urge you to get out of your rut and try something different to broaden your horizons or at least your palate. And it just may be easier on your pocketbook, since so many bars and restaurants have different daily beer specials that can save you some cash while you?re trying something new.

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Beers are categorized into two groups, lagers and ales, depending on the types of yeast and temperatures used dur?ing their cre?ation and fermentation. Lagers use a yeast that fer?ments best at cool tem?per?a?tures, while ales use a yeast that fer?ments better at warmer temps. There are a number of good websites that explain all the different types of beers so, rather than reinvent the wheel, here are some of my favorites. The Beer Pros have a great page, Beer 101, which is short, to the point and can be found at: http://www.thebrewbros.com/beer-101/. I also love the BeerAdvocate?s website (http://beeradvocate.com/), which is full of great information found in its magazine by the same name, and more.

If you live in Raleigh and are looking for a wide selection of beers, either on tap or bottled/canned, luckily there are numerous places for you to choose from and far too many for me to list. Here are some of my favorites, in no particular order, along with some bar food recommendations in some cases. Keep in mind that many of these bars offer beer flights, which are a specific number of small pours, usually 5 ounces, from a predetermined menu. Some places will let you design your own flights, and either way it?s a great way to sample new beers!

Flying Saucer (328 W. Morgan St., Raleigh, N.C. 27601)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Join the UFO club for $18.00 and get a t-shirt and a card to track what you drink. Once you hit 200 different beers you?ll be inducted into the ring of honor with a plate party and $100.00 to spend on beer and food! Love the big soft pretzels and the wings. Great outside seating!

**Note ? since I posted this I?ve learned that Flying Saucer no longer gives you the $100.00 for your plate party. Sigh. Glad Brad and I had ours years ago!

Brickhouse (3801 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, N.C. 27607)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Bar Goddess Maddie takes good care of Brad and me, so that?s one of the reasons this place is on my list. It?s close to home, has more than 40 beers on tap and lots of big screens (some could use upgrading) to watch sports, especially anything Wolfpack! Good outside seating, especially if you don?t mind trains. I have not eaten here since it became the Brickhouse, so I have no food recommendations. I do love its Bloody Marys as well!

Tyler?s Taproom (18 Seaboard Ave., Raleigh, N.C 27604)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Tyler?s recently opened in Raleigh and has more than 80 beers on tap, plus a bottle shop to purchase beers to take home. Nice outside seating, great food. I especially like the Carolina Nachos and the fried green tomato, pimento cheese BLT. Yum!

Village Draft House (428 Daniels St, Raleigh, N.C. 27605)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Located in Raleigh?s Cameron Village Shopping Center, the Draft House has 99 beers on tap. I love its fried pickles and spinach/artichoke dip, but am quite upset that the potato skins are off the menu. Why did they do that? This place is normally packed at lunch and has outside seating. Nice place to stop for a beer if you?re in the Village shopping.

World of Beer (4208-150 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 27609)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

WOB recently opened in Raleigh?s trendy North Hills and is a franchise that has many U.S. locations. Brad and I visited it for the first time just last weekend and there was a good crowd enjoying beer in its outside seating area since it was such a beautiful evening. Good beer selection, with live music Thursday-Saturday nights. I?m not sure that WOB serves food ? I didn?t see any menus in the bar or on its website. We stopped to check it out on our way to Fox and Hound, which is right across the street, and I can see going back again.

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Fox and Hound (4158 Main At North Hills St., Raleigh, N.C. 27609)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Fox and Hound is part of a national chain, and a great place to watch a game. I?ll never forget one afternoon a few years ago I was shopping at North Hills and planned to meet Brad here to watch the second half of some college football games. I arrived early and was so lucky to grab two stools at the bar, right in front of TVs that were showing the NCSU and ECU games, which were the two we wanted to see! Love the potato skins here, which I posted about several months ago.

Carolina Ale House (various locations in Raleigh and surrounding area)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

CAH has lots of North Carolina brews on tap. It?s a great place to watch sports or take the kids for a meal, and the food is pretty decent. Gabe and Lexi love the wings and I can recommend the Carolina Dipper and the Ale House Chili Nachos (also one of Brad?s favorites), which you will want to share. I tried the seasonal flight with some great Oktober-fest type beers.

Draft Carolina Burgers and Beers (510 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, N.C., 27603)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Great selection of North Carolina beers, fantastic potato skins and awesome burgers ? some of the best I?ve had in Raleigh as noted in my burger and potato skins blog posts. That?s basically all you need to know. Go there and enjoy!

My favorite store with an awesome beer selection is the Peace Street Market (804 W. Peace St., Raleigh, N.C. 27605)

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

It may not look like a beer haven from the outside, but inside there are three long walls of coolers filled with various brands of beer, not to mention the nonrefrigerated aisles of brew. The Market carries growlers for the local breweries. This is probably the best beer selection in Raleigh!

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

However, if you can?t get downtown, Whole Foods (various locations) has a good craft selection.

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

So there you go ? no matter what your taste is in beer, you will probably find something to satisfy it in Raleigh. BTW ? many thanks to Brad for helping me with my research. I?m pretty sure he didn?t mind!

 Celebrate National Drink Beer Day

Remember to drink and drive responsibly!

Eat, drink and be merry!

Cheers as NFL refs return: 'It's good to be back'

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Referee Gene Steratore turned on his microphone to greet the captains of the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens for the pre-game coin toss.

"Good evening, men," Steratore said. "It's good to be back."

The stadium erupted in a roar.

Yes, the real refs are back. Official harmony is restored to the NFL.

Steratore and his seven-man crew donned their familiar stripes for the first game of Week 4 after three weeks of replacement officials created moments of chaos throughout the league. The officials ran a mostly smooth and efficient game through three quarters Thursday night, with no headline-making calls as the Ravens took a 23-10 lead over the Browns.

"You know we always pride ourselves in being a face without a name," Steratore, a 10-year league veteran, told The Associated Press about an hour before kickoff. "This will be a little different, but I don't expect it to last too long. And that's the goal ? is that we can let them get through that portion of this. It's happy to be back, it's happy to be appreciated. But then as soon as the game starts, it's happy to disappear again and let the entertainers entertain."

Everyone on all sides was happy to see the familiar faces they usually love to boo, and the welcome-back love began early. About an hour before kickoff, the officials walked on the field and heard cheers from the early arrivals. A few minutes later, Steratore was shaking hands with Browns coach Pat Shurmur near midfield and getting a hug from Ravens face-of-the-franchise Ray Lewis at the 30-yard line.

Later, when the crew returned, they walked on the field they received a standing ovation and doffed their caps to the crowd. One fan held up a sign that read: "Finally! We get to yell at real refs! Welcome back!"

"The other refs just made dumb calls," said Jessie Riley, a 15-year-old fan wearing an Ed Reed jersey. "I couldn't stand them. Now we won't get robbed; everything will be fair ? hopefully."

A lockout of the league's regular officials ended late Wednesday, two days after a disputed touchdown catch on the last play of "Monday Night Football" brought debate over the use of the replacements to a fevered pitch nationwide. The Seattle Seahawks were awarded the score ? and a 14-12 win ? over the Green Bay Packers, a result that Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged "may have pushed the parties further along" in the talks.

"Obviously when you go through something like this it is painful for everybody," Goodell said. "Most importantly, it is painful for our fans. We are sorry to have to put our fans through that, but it is something that in the short term you sometimes have to do to make sure you get the right kind of deal for the long term and make sure you continue to grow the game."

The deal is only tentative ? it must be ratified by 51 percent of the union's 121 members in a vote scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Dallas ? but both sides nevertheless went forward with the plan to have the regulars back for Thursday's game.

So Steratore hustled to Baltimore, making the 3?-hour drive Thursday morning from his home in the Pittsburgh area. He's usually in place the day before a game, but none of his regular pregame meetings had to be changed because the Browns-Ravens game was at night.

"Very elated to be back," he said. "It feels like being back home."

Steratore, who is a basketball official in the Big East Conference among others, also was fully aware he would be jeered the first time he makes a questionable call ? just like always.

"Without a question," he said. "I've been yelled at by my own children many times, so this won't be any different."

Sure enough, the same fans that cheered the coin toss let out a full round of boos when line judge Jeff Seeman toss his yellow flag some 20 yards to whistle Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard for a personal foul in the third quarter. Replays showed it was a good call: Pollard led with his helmet to make contact with a defenseless receiver, costing the Ravens 15 yards in a drive that led to a field goal for the Browns.

Steratore's crew nearly made a misstep in the first quarter, incorrectly spotting the ball by 2 yards after a misapplication of the rules following a holding call on the Browns. But two members of the crew caught the mistake and notified the referee before the next snap. A brief huddle ensued, and the ball was moved to its correct spot.

The crew made it clear early that it wouldn't tolerate the extra pushing and shoving after the whistle that had been frequently permitted by the replacements. Offsetting personal fouls were called on Cleveland's Johnson Bademosi and Baltimore's James Ihedigbo for extracurricular roughness on a punt return.

Steratore had to make a trip to the replay monitor for the same play to review a turnover. The replays clearly showed that Cleveland's Joshua Cribbs had fumbled, so Steratore confirmed the ruling on the field. Cribbs had his helmet knocked off and was injured on the play, creating the only lengthy delay in the first three quarters.

There were 12 penalties called through three quarters, mostly the familiar calls for holding and false start. There was a rare ? and indisputable ? whistle for fair catch interference on a punt return on Cleveland, and a hands-to-the-face call on Baltimore's Mitchell Schwartz was so obvious that it drew three flags.

Steratore and his crew set up shop in the designated "Officials Locker Room" in the bowels of the stadium. He emerged about 2? hours before kickoff to talk briefly to a stadium official about the wireless on-field microphone the referee wears. He later held a regular pregame meeting with stadium crew, telling them to "make sure we run this thing as smoothly" as they had in his previous visits to Baltimore.

Steratore then walked down the tunnel and onto the field, pacing the sidelines with little fanfare because he was still wearing his coat and tie.

The lockout ended after marathon negotiations produced an eight-year agreement to end the lockout that began in June. However, for the Packers, Redskins, Lions and other teams who voiced their displeasure with calls that might have swayed games, the agreement doesn't change their records.

The commissioner said he watched Monday night's frenetic Packers-Seahawks finish at home.

"You never want to see a game end like that," he said.

The new agreement will improve officiating in the future, Goodell asserted, reducing mistakes like those made Monday and making the strains of the last three weeks worthwhile.

Goodell acknowledged "you're always worried" about the perception of the league.

"Obviously, this has gotten a lot of attention," he said. "It hasn't been positive, and it's something that you have to fight through and get to the long term. ... We always are going to have to work harder to make sure we get people's trust and confidence in us."

The dispute even made its way to the campaign trail, with President Barack Obama's spokesman, Jay Carney, calling Thursday "a great day for America."

"The president's very pleased that the two sides have come together," Carney said.

What the? Sam Jackson seeks to wake up voters

wtfu2012.com

By Courtney Hazlett, NBC News

Hey, Mitt Romney: actor Samuel L. Jackson has it out for you, and Obama supporters, the actor's got a strong message for you, too. In a political ad/video funded by the Jewish Council for Education & Research, Jackson tells voters in the same vein of the bedtime book he narrated, "Go the F@#k to Sleep," that they need to "Wake the F@#k Up."

In the video (which includes multiple uses of the F-word -- you've been warned), Jackson narrates a message about taking a careful look at the candidates and not being lazy about the election. An excerpt:

"Sorry my friends, but there's no time to snore
An out-of-touch millionaire just declared war.
On school, the environment, unions, fair pay.
We're all on our own if Romney has his way.
And he's against safety nets, if you fall, tough luck.
So I strongly suggest that you wake the f--- up."

Jackson's video is likely to go quite viral, thanks to his increasingly popular online presence. As one of the break-out Tweeters of the 2012 London Olympics, Jackson has more than 1.5 million Twitter followers.

And while he didn't use the Twitter platform to spread the word about his political video, Jackson has made political commentary on the platform before. After Hurricane Issac did not make landfall in a time or place to interrupt the GOP Convention, he tweeted, "Unfair S---: GOP spared by Issac! NOLA prolly f----- again! Not Understanding God's plan!" While that tweet shows off Jackson's penchant for inflammatory (and profanity-laden) syntax, some are intended more to start a dialogue: "If U had a direct line to Mitt, like U do to me, what would you say? Seeking knowledge not vitriol!"

How To Get Out Of A Dominating Handshake - Business Insider

In a business interaction, if you notice that your companion is trying to give you a handshake with their palm facing downwards, you should immediately strategize on how to get out of this.?

Why??

Because a?handshake is supposed to be a greeting gesture that symbolizes both parties are on equal grounds, yet allowing your palm to face upward while your companion's palm is facing downward is basically allowing them to have the upper-hand, meaning they are now in control and you are not.

This is a bad move during negotiations.

The vibe between the two of you have already been established with that first handshake and everything you say from this moment forward will always have the "lower-hand" to their "upper-hand," especially if they were trying to intimidate you with this handshake.?

"[It] is the most aggressive of all handshakes because it gives the receiver little chance of establishing an equal relationship," according to Westside Toastmasters, a non-profit organization aimed at helping people?improve their public speaking and leadership skills.

Toastmasters shared three techniques on getting out of these overbearing handshakes:

1. The Step-to-the-Right Technique.

Basically, if you're right-footed ("The natural position for 90 percent of people when shaking with the right hand), you'll have more of an advantage when you step into the handshake with your left foot, and vice versa.

When someone extends their hand for a dominant handshake, you can prevent this interaction from happening by first stepping forward with your left foot.

?

Next, step forward with your right leg and into the other person's personal space. You can then cross your left leg across your right leg (Although, we've tried this and it's a little awkward).?

"This tactic allows you to straighten the handshake or even turn it over into the submissive position. It feels as if you're walking across in front of him and is the equivalent of winning an arm-wrestling bout. It also allows you to take control by invading his personal space."

2.?The Hand-on-Top Technique.

As you're going in for the dominating handshake, respond with your palms up at first; then, place your other hand ? the left one ? over your companion's hand to form a "Double-Hander" and simply straighten the handshake to a more equal position.

This technique is easier for women to use.?

3. The Last Resort Technique.?

If all else fails, and you feel as though your companion is trying to intimidate you, grab their hand from the top and shake it. But only do this as a last resort since it can shock the other person and is a very obvious maneuver.?

Cooperative-Style Living Eases One Writing Mother's Juggle ...

Bookmark and Share

Most parents of young kids only dream about how helpful it would be to live in a community where friends, neighbors or extended family pitch in systematically to help each other out with everything from childcare to daily errands.

But author Anjali Mitter Duva has made it her reality by intentionally partnering with a neighbor to share cooking, grocery shopping and childcare. The arrangement, which all began seven years ago with two steaming bowls of pho soup, has grown into the cornerstone of Anjali?s strategy for juggling fiction-writing with the care of her two young children, her work as a professional project manager and her role as volunteer executive director of Chhandam Institute of Kathak Dance.?In fact, it worked out so well for both women that their families ultimately decided to move together into a new, two-family home to continue sharing day-to-day responsibilities into the foreseeable future.

This amazing story of modern-day, cooperative-style living has implications for families everywhere. ?It?s an honor to have Anjali here today to tell us about it.

Welcome, Anjali!

Q: When you first met the neighbor, Kathy, whose family you now share daily life with, you were total strangers. ?Tell us how your relationship began.

AMD: It all began about seven years ago. My family was were living in a typical New England triple-decker, on the middle floor. We had a cordial relationship with the couple who had been living downstairs for the previous 2-3 years. During that time, we?d been tantalized by the aromas of cooking which wafted up through the ventilation system. Whenever the heat or AC came on, we were first hit with the mouthwatering smells of sizzling garlic, Szichuan peppercorns, star anise and the like. Kathy is Vietnamese, and makes fabulous soups (pho), dishes with rice noodles and grilled catfish, fresh rolls? I could go on. Anyhow, one day she called us and said she had made a vast amount of pho, and would we like some? ?Next thing we knew, she was at our door bearing two steaming bowls of fabulous soup, along with dishes of Thai basil, lime, bean sprouts and various other condiments.

The next time I made something easily scaled up to a larger quantity, we offered her and her husband a meal. I think it was boeuf bourguignon. She accepted, and a new tradition was born. We each had a baby or toddler at home, and having one night a week of a fabulous, tasty and home-made meal delivered to our door was wonderful. For the person cooking, it was hardly any more effort, and for the one receiving the food, it was a major help. This has been the basis for the whole arrangement.

Q: How did this evolve into the current arrangement where you intentionally plan meals together, share grocery shopping, watch each other?s children and take joint vacations?

AMD:It was all a very gradual process, and I think that has been key to its success. If two sets of friends set off right from the start to have such an integrated arrangement, I think it is highly likely it would fail. For one thing, we were not really friends to begin with. Of course, we got along well, but there was none of the emotional baggage of a friendship?what if I say no to a dish, will I hurt her feelings? What if she feels this is a burden? There was none of that. And as each system worked well, we gradually added more aspects, in a very organic fashion. From an organized you-cook-on-Mondays-I?ll-cook-on-Wednesdays type of arrangement, we gradually became flexible about which day would be whose, depending on our schedules each week. We were both working, juggling many things, and the whole point was for it to be a help, not an additional chore. And then, it morphed into a system in which one of us, upon planning a meal that could easily be doubled, would simply call the other and offer it, even several times a week. It made sense.

Then came the other aspects. I had to run out to do an errand, and the baby was asleep, so I dropped off the monitor with Kathy, who was right downstairs in the same building, and did what I needed to do. While I was out, I was going to stop at a grocery store, so did Kathy need anything? In this way, we started piggybacking the other person?s errands on our own. Once this started, we began a running tab, which lives on my fridge. The funny thing is, money hardly ever crosses hands! Without a conscious effort on our parts, the spending of money has always been quite even. We could probably do without the tab, but we are both very practical and pragmatic, and we believe it?s good to have, even after seven years. Here?s an amusing fact: we?ve gone on vacations together, our two families, and usually kept a bowl in which we drop our initalled receipts during the week. At the end of the vacation, we tally it all up, and see who owes who what. On one of our trips, to Savannah, the difference ended up being $2! And more recently we shared a house in Portugal, and had a similar experience.

Yes, you read that correctly. We?ve gone on vacation together several times. You might wonder why, since we live near each other, but it?s been fantastic for everyone. It doesn?t necessarily mean that we do everything together. When each family had just one child, it meant that the kids each had a playmate, and the parents could relax a bit more. For example, each morning, one parent of the four got up early with the kids. The other three got to sleep in. And during the day, one family could take the other?s child, and in this way one couple could have a day and/or evening together, sans children. Four parents with two children, it was a perfect ratio!

Now we each have a second child, and they are just four months apart. They might as well be twins. They benefit (suffer?) from having four parents each, and our economies of scale have simply grown with us. The older children have sleepovers, and help watch the younger ones, and their own relationship has continued to be essentially that of siblings.

Q: Can you describe how the cooking, grocery and child-care sharing works on a day-to-day basis?

AMD:Well, there?s how it works, and why it works. The why is key: Kathy and I have very similar temperaments. We are planners. We are practical. We know that if something slips the mind of one, it will likely be remembered by the other. We have similar educational backgrounds (in fact, by coincidence, all four of us went to the same college, although the two couples didn?t know each other then). It?s all rather uncanny. But the compatability is not just between the two of us. Our families are compatible. The two husbands have many interests in common, and some similar personality traits. The two families have nearly identical values when it comes to parenting, spending money, all those areas which are key to harmony. I know that if one of my children does something for which she needs to be disciplined, and she is Next Door (as we each refer to the other household), I can trust that the issue will be handled the way my husband and I would handle it ourselves. (Our oldest children have been known to grumble and say to one of us ?That?s exactly what my mom would say!?) And this is the area which I can only attribute to miraculous luck: it was total coincidence that our families ended up being neighbors. And of course, it helps that we all eat everything, and are always happy to try out new things. There are several cultures and backgrounds represented among us?Indian, French, Vietnamese, Filipino, Jewish, Catholic, Buddhist, Hindu, and, more tangentially, Italian and Polish?and we?ve all integrated elements of all of these into our lives. I speak in French to Kathy?s youngest daughter, and she speaks in Vietnamese to mine. It all works out.

As to how it works on a day-to-day basis, Kathy and I joke that we need a direct feed between our brains. We talk several times a day. The kids go in and out of each other?s homes. (We connected our back decks to facilitate this, although we miss the days in our previous home, when no one had to step outside. A couple of winters ago, we literally had to tunnel through the snow to get back and forth, and that?s not easy with trays of soup!) It?s a bit like a sit-com. I?ll float into Next Door in my pajamas with my cup of tea in the morning and vent at Kathy about some random thing (another advantage: a built in outlet for venting, a sounding board for ideas, a source of advice), and while I?m there I?ll pick up the (clean) dishes from the last meal I sent over, and drop off some clothes that my daughter has outgrown, and we?ll plan the next couple of dinners. Kathy will mention she needs to go to Target, and I?ll text her my list. Later in the day, I?ll hear the garage door open, and she?ll drop off the purchases. Once the children are home from school and daycare and my work day has, whether I like it or not, come to an end, we often pool the kids on one side, with one of us keeping an eye on them, the other getting started with dinner prep. Sometimes, especially if a husband is running late for dinner, we?ll feed all four kids on one side, so at least there?s only one home which is a total mess. (Two of the children are now two, so the downstairs usually looks like a tornado hit it by bed time.)

When my husband and I looked for a new home, it took us a year just to agree on what we wanted! ?How did the house-hunting go with not one, but two, couples involved?

Again, a lot of luck. And sticking to what we cared about. We were fortunate to work with a realtor who ?got? what we were trying to do. She represented us (each family) on the buyer side, and her partner, both in life and in business, helped us on the seller side, since we each had to sell our condos. All in all, they stood to gain from four transactions! So they were motivated, too. Nonetheless, it was a long process, and we are so grateful that they stuck by us for two years. (They also benefitted from a few ?commune? meals as we met to discuss offers.) What we were trying to do was unusual, unorthodox, and probably, for many of the agents or owners of the places we looked at, just plain weird. You should have seen their faces when we?d ask if we could build a door between the two units! We live, at least here in the US, in a society which believes that ?good fences make good neighbors? and people want to have their own possessions and their own land, and here we were, a jumbled mix of people speaking a jumble of languages, wanting to take down fences and make holes in the wall! It?s not that we don?t believe in clear delineations (for example, we have never mingled any finances, and even when we connected the decks, we made sure to do it in such a way that they could be disconnected again when we sell our units) but we might appear that way to many.

In the end, it took us two years to find what we wanted. Every now and then, our realtors would gently suggest that we consider two houses on the same street, but we just shook our heads. How could we bring meals to each other that way? How could our children wander in and out of each other?s homes that way? In the nick of time, we found our place. I gave birth to my youngest just three weeks after moving in.

Q: How has your partnership with Kathy and her family helped your writing and your other outside endeavors, both creative and professional?

AMD:Wow. I can hardly even begin to answer that. When my book is published, she?s going to be among the first to be acknowledged. Having an extra ?me,? essentially, has saved my sanity, my creativity, and probably my career. On the writing front, I?ve been able to attend workshops and events knowing that Kathy and her family could take my children for the gap of time between when I needed to leave the house and when my husband could get home from work. I?ve managed to eke out extra hours of writing time when my youngest was napping in the afternoons by sending my oldest next door for a while, and knowing that I didn?t need to think about making dinner. As I type this, Kathy is picking up both older ones at school so I can have an extra half hour. I?ve had to be on work calls (I freelance as a writer and project manager) early in the morning before the sitter has arrived, and Kathy has been able to take the little one. Similarly, recently, she texted me from Next Door because she was on a phone interview and her daughter woke up crying in her crib. I swooped in and watched her while her mother fielded questions about how she dealt with crises and juggled many projects at once. And of course Kathy and her family have seen me through the ups and downs of writing a book and trying to get it published. Kathy has read and commented on my manuscript.

They?ve also been a tremendous help when I?ve gone away. I am planning a research trip to India for my next book, and I can only really contemplate leaving the kids back home because I know there is a whole additional family to help out. (My husband will be here, but he tends to have to work long hours.) I attended a four day kathak (Indian classical) dance retreat in California in August, and Kathy picked up children after camp, helped with morning drop off, etc.

Q: Has it influenced your children and family? ?How?

AMD:Beyond the obvious inflence on my own life, I think it has helped our family maintain a certain level of sanity and standards that might have otherwise slipped in a household with two working parents who also have several other activities (my husband, for example, also teaches martial arts while I?m quite involved in Indian dance). The standard of our meals, for example, I think has remained quite high, because when either Kathy or I cook, we are more likely to make something tasty or creative or elaborate, from scratch, than if we had to cook every single day. Similarly, we don?t mind shopping in several different locations to get the best combination of produce and fish and meat because we divvy up the errands, so one of us picks up fresh produce at a farm stand while the other gets the staples at the supermarket. Still just one trip for each of us, with double the rewards.

I think the children have also been influenced tremendously, although they probably don?t realize it now. Most likely, it will dawn on them when they are older how special their childhood was. For example, they have all the advantages of multiple siblings each?built in playmates, pals to team up with, other children who will commiserate about the unfairness of parents?without the down sides. They still each get to have their own room (although they like to do sleepovers), their own toys and books, etc. Culturally, they are also gaining a lot. Just the number of languages in our households is a benefit to them, especially for the younger two who entered the scene when the ?commune? was already in full effect. And the variety of foods they encounter at the dinner table is greater than it would have been otherwise, especially for us with the addition of the Vietnamese component. Soups made with oxtail and dried squid are nothing unusual here.

Q: Tell us about your novel, Faint Promise of Rain.

AMD: Throughout these years, in addition to helping to run a dance non-profit, Chhandika, and freelancing, I have written a historical novel, and am now working to get it published while I begin to write another one. (That?s a whole other post!) Set in sixteenth century northern India, Faint Promise of Rain tells the story of Adhira, who is born into a family of Hindu temple dancers on the day of the first rains in five years. Around her, fear of change under a conquering Muslim emperor abounds. Adhira?s father, however, turns a blind eye to the political happenings, and places all his hopes for his sacred tradition in this youngest child of his.

I developed, with a documentary videographer, a trailer for the book, which is at www.faintpromiseofrain.com. The inspiration for the story came from my study of kathak dance, a centuries-old storytelling art form of North India. The start of my dance training coincided with a recent return from Jaisalmer, a truly magical fortress city in the Thar desert of India, and the strong visuals I retained from that trip, along with the dance and a glimpse into its history, along with my inclination to write and my own Indian heritage, all came together and enabled me to write this book.

Q: And just to whet our appetites even more, can you give us an idea of some of the dishes you and Kathy like to cook?

AMD: For the dishes Kathy cooks, the easiest would be for you to hop over to kathynle.com and check out some of her recipes and photos. Be forewarned, however, that you will get hungry! As for me, I don?t make nearly as many Indian dishes as I?d like, but I do a lot of French-inspired cooking, having lived 18 years in France, and like to explore foods from Mediterranean regions. Tonight I am making a salade ni?oise, and my recipe, along with a week of summer meals, can be found here.?My husband is also a big fan of grilling and BBQ, and will make North Carolina pulled pork, or ribs, or brisket.

Thank you, Anjali! ?My stomach is growling and I?m contemplating bringing over a vat of?French onion soup to my next door neighbor to see where things go.
