The Causes and Cure of Hemorrhoids - Health Fitness ...

The Causes and Cure of Hemorrhoids ? Health Fitness. Most people of adult age have probably suffered the indignity of having to cope with Hemorrhoids, otherwise known as Piles. As anyone who has suffered from piles knows, these can be very uncomfortable and painful. What exactly are Hemorrhoids? In a medical sense they are enlarged or swollen veins. They are somewhat similar to varicose veins that develop in the legs, except that these are veins located in the anus. These veins cushion and protect the anal canal. Problems arise when these veins are stretched and tear under pressure, resulting in the familiar discomfort and pain experienced with haemorrhoids. One may experience hemorroids as either internal or external. Internal hemorrhoids are located higher up in the anus and normally manifest themselves as stools covered in blood or blood on the toilet paper. Sometimes the hemorrhoids will protrude from the anal canal, in which case they should just be pushed back inside. External haemorrhoids, on the other hand, exist as hard lumps that can be felt by hand and are extremely painful compared to internal haemorrhoids. These may also cause bleeding which will be seen on the toilet paper or in the toilet bowl. Causes of Piles Constipation tends to be the main cause of Piles. The straining of bowel movement during prolonged siting on the toilet puts pressure on the blood vessel in the anal canal, causing swelling and irritation and eventual rupture of the blood vessels ?

Israel must complete peace deal with Abbas: Peres

JERUSALEM: President Shimon Peres on Sunday urged Israel to resume peace talks with the Palestinians, saying their president Mahmud Abbas was a willing partner with whom an agreement could be reached.

Speaking with Israeli diplomats at his Jerusalem residence, Peres said the only way the Jewish state could positively affect the fluctuating reality in the region was "to complete the peace agreement with the Palestinians."

"I know there are different opinions," he said. "This is not a matter of ideology, this is a matter of appraising" the situation.

"I have known Abu Mazen for 30 years, and nobody will change my opinion of him," Peres continued, using Abbas's nom de guerre.

"I know there is criticism of things Abu Mazen said," Peres continued, but "there is currently no other Arab leader who is saying he is in favour of peace, against terror, in favour of a demilitarised state, and of... the Palestinian consensual right of return."

"There is not much time left," he warned.

Talks between the Israel and the Palestinians have been on hold since September 2010, with the Palestinians insisting on a settlement freeze before returning to the negotiating table and the Israelis insisting on no preconditions.

Following last month's historic United Nations vote giving the Palestinians upgraded status in the world body, Israel announced a new spate of settlement building in the West Bank and Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem.

Peres's remarks elicited a harsh response from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, which is contesting January 22 elections on a joint list with ex-foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman's ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu party.

"It is very saddening that the president chose to express a personal political opinion that is contrary to the Israeli public's stance on Abu Mazen, the peace refuser," a statement from the party read.

"The prime minister has called on Abu Mazen to return to the negotiating table dozens of times," it read, saying the Palestinian leader "prefers to join forces with Hamas and act against Israel in every possible sphere."

Netanyahu himself, however, softened his party's line a few hours later.

"I respect the president, I value him," he told Channel 2 television. "There is a variety of opinions, we exchange opinions on topics on the agenda."

Lieberman, who resigned as Israel's top diplomat earlier this month, following indictments on fraud and breach of trust, has consistently said Abbas is not interested in reaching a peace deal with Israel.

He has also described Abbas as an obstacle to negotiations, suggesting it would be better for the Palestinian leader to step down.

Google Play Surges, Apple App Store Still Lords Over Mobile App Market

Google-PlayGoogle Play recorded a big surge in its sales of mobile applications but it is still Apple?s App Store that reigned supreme after garnering the largest share in the pie, Mobile analytics Distimo released Wednesday.

Google Play has been on a tear in the mobile app market over the last four months, recording a 43 percent jump in its daily sales across 20 countries as reported by Distimo.

Then again, the figure was not enough to topple the App store from its thrown as Apple?s app distributor also registered a decent surge in its sales after gaining a 21 percent increase on a daily basis.

The App store also benefited from its strong performance in the first months of 2012, especially in January when it chalked up 51 percent on daily sales.

Destimo pointed out that the decline of App Store?s sales is caused by an already higher revenues, leaving Apple with limited room to generate more money. A good example for this is the Apple?s huge sales November, when it surpassed the $15 million threshold while Google Play only registered $3.5 million across 20 countries.

According to Destimo, the United States was the biggest market for Apple?s App store in 2012, while Japan, the United Kingdom, and Australia rounded up the Big 4. On the other hand, the United States and Japan are the largest markets for Google Play while Android-heavy using country Korea ranked third.

Naver?s Line Pop is the most successful game on any app store recently, recording 1.75 downloads three days from its release. It already racked up a cool $1 million in sales within its first 12 days.

However, the mobile app market is not always a mine of gold as an influx of new applications continued to crowd the market daily, hurting in the process start-up developers.

?And a small number of apps still account for a disproportionate share of overall usage. In November, just seven apps grabbed 10 percent of all sales for the App Store for the iPhone. That number was down from January when 11 apps took in those 10 percent of sales. And just 31 apps generated 10 percent of all free apps downloaded,? Distimo released Thursday.

4 dead in Moscow airliner crash

MOSCOW (AP) ? A passenger airliner careered off the runway at Russia's third-busiest airport while landing on Saturday, broke into pieces and caught fire, killing at least four people.

Officials said there were eight people aboard the Tu-204 belonging to Russian airline Red Wings that was flying back from the Czech Republic without passengers to its home at Vnukovo Airport.

Emergency officials said in a televised news conference that four people were killed and another four severely injured when the plane rolled off the runway into a snowy field and disintegrated.

Russia's state television showed photos of the plane's wreckage, with the cockpit sheared off from the fuselage and a large chunk gashed out near the tail.

The crash occurred amid light snow, but other details were not immediately known.

Vnukovo airport spokeswoman Yelena Krylova said it had enough personnel and equipment to keep the runway fully functional. The airport resumed receiving planes after a break of several hours.

Prior to Saturday's crash, there had been no fatal accidents reported for Tu-204s, which entered commercial service in 1995. The plane is a twin-engine midrange jet with a capacity of about 210 passengers.

Vnukovo, on the southern outskirts of Moscow, is one of the Russian capital's three international airports.

Reid's future uncertain after Eagles' finish

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Andy Reid sounded like a man who knows he's going to lose his job.

Eli Manning threw a career-best five touchdown passes and the New York Giants routed Philadelphia 42-7 on Sunday in what likely was Reid's final game coaching the Eagles.

"We weren't very good," Reid said. "That's my responsibility and I take complete blame for it."

The Eagles (4-12) lost 11 of their final 12 games after a promising 3-1 start and missed the playoffs for the second straight year for the first time in Reid's 14 seasons. It was their worst record under Reid.

Asked if he wants to return in 2013, Reid said: "I'm all in."

Reid expects to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Monday.

"I go in eyes wide open," Reid said. "Either way, I understand. Whatever he chooses will be the right thing. He always does things for the best interests of the Eagles."

Reid won more games (140) than any coach in franchise history. He led the Eagles to nine playoff appearances, six division titles, five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl loss.

But he couldn't win the big one and that's how he's measured in a city that hasn't celebrated an NFL title since 1960.

The Eagles haven't won a playoff game since 2008 and took significant steps backward the last two years. They entered both seasons with high expectations only to fail miserably.

"We had quite a run," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.

Players said they expect changes, but continued to support Reid.

"He's a great man and I love him to death," said quarterback Michael Vick, who could've played his last game with the Eagles. "I wish I could've done more. A lot of players wish they could've done more. Coaches can't play the games."

An ugly loss to the Giants (9-7) was a fitting end to a terrible season for the Eagles, who began the year with Super Bowl aspirations.

Tight end Brent Celek called it "embarrassing." Defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins questioned his teammates' effort. So did Vick before trying to clarify his comment.

"We came, we stunk it up and we lost. It was terrible. No heart," Jenkins said.

Added Vick: "Sometimes I wish I can play other positions."

Vick was 19 of 35 for 197 yards, one TD and one interception in his first game since Nov. 11. He missed the previous six games, sitting out the first five with a concussion and then being inactive last week. Vick only got the start because rookie Nick Foles broke his hand.

Vick is due to earn about $16 million next year, but the Eagles can release him without taking a financial hit. He wants to be a starter and is unsure whether he even wants to come back.

"I don't know. I have to take time to think about everything that's happened," Vick said.

The Eagles talked all week about wanting to win one for Reid. They should've stayed on the team bus instead.

After opening the game with an onside kick and recovering, it was all downhill for Philadelphia.

That first drive ended when Vick was intercepted by Stevie Brown, who returned the pick 48 yards to the Eagles 26. A few plays later, Manning hit Rueben Randle on a 3-yard TD pass for a 7-0 lead.

Manning then connected with Randle on a 38-yard TD pass over Nnamdi Asomugha to make it 14-0. He tossed a 15-yard TD pass to David Wilson for a 21-0 lead.

The Eagles finally got going early in the second quarter. Vick threw a 15-yard pass to Jason Avant on fourth-and-10 and hit Jeremy Maclin on a 7-yard pass for a TD on fourth-and-1.

But the defense couldn't stop the Giants. After a pass interference penalty on Asomugha in the end zone, Ahmad Bradshaw ran in from the 1 to make it 28-7.

Right before the half, Manning connected with a wide-open Victor Cruz for a 24-yard TD to make it 35-7.

Manning's fifth TD pass was a 1-yard toss to Henry Hynoski.

"If it's an effort deal, shame on them," Celek said about players who didn't give their all.

Despite the lopsided win, the Giants are also going home.

The defending Super Bowl champions were eliminated from playoff contention when Chicago beat Detroit 26-24. It marks the seventh straight season the Super Bowl champion has failed to win a playoff game the following year.

Manning finished 13 of 21 for 208 yards and no interceptions. Bradshaw rushed for 107 yards and passed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second time in his career.

NOTES: Reid has one year left on his contract for about $6 million. ... The Eagles allowed 25 touchdowns passing and had only one interception in the final 10 games after Todd Bowles replaced Juan Castillo as defensive coordinator. ... The Eagles missed the playoffs four of the last eight years after going to the 2005 Super Bowl.

Senate leaders work to avoid New Year's "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressional negotiators burrowed into their Capitol offices on Saturday to see if they can stop the economy from falling off of a "fiscal cliff" in just three days when the biggest tax increases ever to hit Americans in one shot are scheduled to begin.

Aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell were expected to work through the day on a possible compromise that would set aside $600 billion in tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts that are set to kick in next week.

A variety of lower taxes are scheduled to expire on December 31. If allowed to rise, the approximately $500 billion value of the revenue increases would represent a historic hike when taken together.

The combined punch of the tax increases and spending cuts would likely put the U.S. economy into a downward spiral, according to economists' forecasts.

"We're now at the point where, in just a couple days, the law says that every American's tax rates are going up. Every American's paycheck will get a lot smaller. And that would be the wrong thing to do for our economy," President Barack Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, which was broadcast on Saturday.

At midday, McConnell walked into his office on the second floor of the Capitol. Asked by waiting journalists if he thought his efforts would be successful, McConnell responded: "I hope so."

A Senate Republican leadership aide said that it might not be known until sometime on Sunday whether these talks bear fruit. That is when leaders are expected to brief their rank-and-file members.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a rare Sunday session beginning at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), but it was not clear whether the chamber would have fiscal cliff legislation to act upon.

Reid and McConnell and their staffs held last-ditch negotiations Friday night and resumed on Saturday with no guarantees that their efforts would pay off. Republicans remained opposed to Obama's demand that households making above $250,000 a year see their income tax rate rise to 39.6 percent, from the current 35 percent, in order to help tame budget deficits.

In recent days, some aides have said that a $400,000 threshold, instead of $250,000, has been discussed as a possible compromise.

PESSIMISTIC OUTLOOK

Democrats and Republicans also are jousting over what to do about inheritance taxes on estates.

Unless Congress acts, the tax is set to jump on January 1 to 55 percent with the first $1 million exempted for individuals. Currently, there is a 35 percent tax and a $5 million exemption.

One Democratic aide was pessimistic that McConnell would come up with a counteroffer that Reid would find acceptable. Such a counteroffer would have to be calibrated in a way that also could attract votes from conservative House Republicans, many of whom have balked at any tax rate increases.

Similarly, a senior House Republican aide on Saturday voiced pessimism about prospects for a deal.

"It's hard to see Reid agreeing to anything that can get the votes of the majority of the majority in the House, thereby allowing a bipartisan accomplishment," the aide said. A "majority of the majority" refers to the 241 Republicans who are in the 435-member House.

The Republican aide placed the blame squarely on Democrats, as many Republican members have done publicly, saying that going off the fiscal cliff is a "policy upside" for them. "Higher taxes, devastating defense cuts. The polls tell them they can win the PR war in January. From their perspective, why stop the cliff dive?"

Democrats, in turn, have publicly accused Republican House Speaker John Boehner of preferring to put off any tough fiscal cliff votes until after a January 3 House election in which he is expected to win another two-year term as speaker.

If McConnell and Reid can manage to reach a deal on inheritance taxes and raising income tax rates on the wealthiest, they likely would throw into the compromise some other fiscal cliff solutions.

Those could include extending an array of other expiring tax breaks, such as one that encourages companies to conduct research and development. Also, Congress wants to prevent a steep pay-cut in January for doctors who treat elderly Medicare patients.

Lawmakers also want to prevent middle-class taxpayers from inadvertently creeping into a higher tax bracket, known as the alternative minimum tax, intended for the wealthiest.

If the Reid-McConnell effort fails, Obama has asked the Senate to hold a vote on Monday on a "basic package" that would stop taxes from going up on the middle class and would extend long-term unemployment benefits that are about to expire. If it passed the Senate, its fate would be in the hands of the Republican-controlled House.

San Diego Real Estate: Mortgage Defaults Diving ? CT Homes LLC

Are San Diego foreclosures really declining or is it all more statistical tricks, in an attempt to make the market look healthy?

The latest round of figures from DataQuick and UT San Diego show a steep and steady decline in the local foreclosure rate. The figures show a 15% drop in notices of default being filed between October and November, to half of what we were seeing this time last year. This puts San Diego County at a measly 819 foreclosure notices last month, the lowest rate since August 2006.

This all sounds like incredibly positive news and in combination with rising home sales volume and home prices suggests we truly are in recovery mode if not entering a new boom era.

Still, San Diego real estate prices still have about a 30% climb to go before hitting their previous high, and before we can really call an officially and completely healed market.

However, are these statistics really painting a true picture of the market or are they being skewed by other factors?

Lower foreclosure figures could certainly be accounted for by at least two other factors. The first being the massive trend in short sales. 40,000 Californian homes have reportedly been sold as short sale since the mortgage settlement, but anyway you count them, it means they are being recycled.

The second could be mortgage lenders holding back on actually filing foreclosures. In fact it was just revealed that Bank of America alone has over $64 billion of 180 day or more delinquent home loans on the books which have not had foreclosure notices filed against them.

Fortunately, most real estate agents and investors are actually crying out for more distressed home inventory as we are now down to only about half of the available homes as 3 years ago. If this is accurate, the San Diego foreclosure crisis peaked in 2009.

This would indicate about another 3 years of foreclosures trailing off while San Diego builds on its reputation as one of the healthiest real estate markets in the country.

Health And Fitness ? Philosophy Gets Results | Health

I LOVE IT! I love it as a result of I am a philosophical kind of guy and it links your philosophy to who are, what you?re thinking, saying and doing and where you are right currently! It makes you in charge of your own lifestyle, results, actions, perspective and philosophy!!! Therefore let?s use this wisdom to replicate on our health and fitness and our life.
LIFESTYLES
It?d be somewhat obvious to say that our health and fitness contains a big impact on our lifestyle! Anyone who ignores that fact is possibly encumbered by too much weight, lack of energy or esteem, low motivation, poor and/or failing health or even disability. The sedentary (inactive) lifestyle is restrained and limited ? compared to the health and fitness lifestyle ? that not only prevents illness and disease however empowers you with more capability and freedom in all areas of your life! Not happy along with your lifestyle? Take a look at your results!
RESULTS
The state of your health and fitness very is the state of you as someone! Barring injury, illness or impairment (over which you?ve got no management) ? any alternative lack of health and fitness comes down to YOU! You would possibly say you?re too busy, too tired, too poor or too whatever however the fact is they are all EXCUSES! If you create your health and fitness a priority ? you?ll make time to try and do the proper things and you may get the results you desire. The results you get are the results you deserve based mostly on your actions!
ACTIONS
Wish to induce fitter? Watch additional TV! Need to induce leaner? Eat another cake! Does not make sense does it?! It?s almost despicable to mention you really want one thing and then do nothing to attain it! Or worse do one thing to push yourself additional away! You actions are the cross roads where you?ll be able to turn thoughts, dreams and needs into realities ? results and lifestyles! Your actions also are the cross roads where thoughts, dreams and desires stay simply that. Thoughts ARE nothing while not action and it?s our actions that are the sole real expression of our attitude.
ATTITUDE
We have a tendency to are delving into the depths of the psyche now so let?s simply say perspective is what we tend to suppose (our beliefs, feelings and values)! What we have a tendency to believe, feel and value affects what we do and have? YES!!!! Therefore it?s attainable that what we tend to suppose will help us or hinder us? Yes!!!! Thus it is possible that my wonderful results or lack of results will be largely attributed to what I suppose, believe, feel and price? YES!!! And Guess what!!! You can change your thoughts, beliefs, feelings and values any moment you need!! You control these items ? you management your thoughts and your body and it is not the opposite manner around!
PHILOSOPHY
Speaking of depths it does not get abundant deeper than principles and truths of being, knowledge and conduct. Our philosophy (what we tend to accept to be guiding truths and principles) definitely affect what we think, what we tend to do, what we tend to have and the way we tend to live. If you doubt this attempt comparing two totally different religions and you?ll see examples of various philosophy yielding different attitudes, actions, results and lifestyles. Some of your guiding principles and truths could would like confirmation (if they?re leading you towards what you would like in life) or reflection and re-setting (if they are leading you removed from what you wish in your life). You have the ability to decide on your philosophy ? your purpose and your inspiration. Here?s a little philosophy that helps me:
?Health is a necessity for the duties and the pleasures?. You only get one life ? I can guarantee my health and fitness helps me to perform my duties to the most effective of my ability and helps me to fancy the pleasures in all of their richness. Ryan

Stomach bug knocks Nadal from Australian Open

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Just when Rafael Nadal had recovered from a knee injury, a stomach virus has delayed his return to tennis by a couple of months.

Nadal announced Friday he will miss next month's Australian Open and probably won't play again until the end of February. The Spaniard said he needs time to recover from the virus that already prevented him from coming back this week at Abu Dhabi.

Nadal has been sidelined since June with a knee injury, which forced him to miss the London Olympics and U.S. Open. He had planned to rejoin the ATP tour at the Qatar Open in Doha next month before the Jan. 14-27 Australian Open, but pulled out of both.

"We just hope he gets better quickly and we see him back on the tour as soon as possible," Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said. "Tennis fans across the world have been missing him."

While he is expected to recover from the virus in time for the year's first Grand Slam tournament, Nadal and his team said he wouldn't have the proper preparation for a five-set event.

Nadal stressed that his decision had nothing to do with the tendinitis in his left knee. That injury prompted him to take a break following a second-round loss to then 100th-ranked Lukas Rosol at Wimbledon in June.

"My knee is much better and the rehabilitation process has gone well as predicted by the doctors," Nadal said in a statement from his hometown of Manacor on the island of Mallorca. "But this virus didn't allow me to practice this past week and therefore I am sorry to announce that I will not play in Doha and the Australian Open."

The former No. 1 hopes to return at a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, starting Feb. 27. He left open the possibility of playing at an earlier tournament if his recovery went well.

"As my team and doctors say, the safest thing to do is to do things well and this virus has delayed my plans of playing these weeks," Nadal said. "I always said that my return to competition will be when I am in the right conditions to play and after all this time away from the courts I'd rather not accelerate the comeback and prefer to do things well."

Nadal's doctor, Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, said in the same statement that the player needed at least a week to recover from the virus. That ruled him out for the Qatar Open, which starts Jan. 2.

Nadal's coach and uncle, Toni Nadal, said going straight to a five-set tournament after being sidelined so long was "not appropriate."

"It is simply not conceivable that his first event is a best-of-five sets event," he said in a statement. "He wouldn't be ready for that."

Nadal's knee injury prevented the 11-time Grand Slam winner from defending his Olympic singles gold medal at last summer's games, where he was supposed to be Spain's flag-bearer in the opening ceremony. He also had to pull out of the U.S. Open and Spain's Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic, which his teammates lost without him.

Nadal, ranked No. 4, won the Australian Open in 2009. Last year, he lost to top-ranked Novak Djokovic in a title match that lasted 5 hours, 53 minutes, the longest recorded Grand Slam final.

    ?On Top of Spaghetti?

The late folk singer Tom Glazer first performed his classic children's ballad "On Top of Spaghetti" in 1963. Sung to the tune of the traditional "On Top of Old Smoky," the song tells the story of a meatball on the run. Swept from table to floor by a thunderous sneeze, the meatball ends up rolling outdoors. It bounces along, gathering dust, dirt, gravel, and bits of trash along its surface. Finally, it tumbles under a shrub, nothing but mush, a shadow of its once-plump self. The following summer, so the song goes, having presumably sunk well into the fertile earth beneath its leafy shroud, the battered wad of meat sprouts up as a moss-covered tree bearing saucy meatball fruit.

While the idea of kids clamoring after a dirty meatball is nauseating, the fantasy?a comestible growing into a tree producing many pieces of food identical to the planted one?appeals to both children and adults. In C.S. Lewis' The Magician's Nephew, the sixth book of his Chronicles of Narnia series, young Digory Kirke plants a toffee in enchanted soil. Overnight, a "little, very dark-wooded tree ? loaded with little brown fruits ... rather like dates" pops up, and Digory and his friend Polly tackle it for a sugary breakfast only an irresponsible parent would permit:? ?The fruit was delicious; not exactly like toffee?softer for one thing, and juicy?but like fruit that reminded one of toffee.?? (If I lived in Narnia, I would plant a bottle of good vinho verde, a cocktail frank, and some fine mustard in that magical dirt.)

I used to teach pre-kindergarten. Toward the end of my tenure, I played "On Top of Spaghetti" for my class of 4- and 5-year olds. The kids knew the song and were singing the first lines before the CD began spinning. When Tom and his gang of under-age back-up vocalists finished up, I posed a few questions to the gathered circle: Did the song make them hungry? Did they like meatballs? Did they like the idea of eating meatballs after hearing the tune describe, in graphic detail, one sorry meatball's unsanitary backyard odyssey?

The class's love for the meatball was robust. Expertly deploying the passive voice to deflect any blame for the meatball?s fall from the table, a child named Riley laid out the position in a nervous little voice:?

"It was dropped on the floor, but it was still yummy ... because it was a meatball."

The rest of the class agreed with Riley?s cast-iron logic. Meatballs, as Anna put it, were "a big treat,? regardless of what they?d rolled through. Piping up from under cropped dark bangs and a plastic tiara, Chelsea alone dissented.?

"I like meatballs very much," she said seriously, "but I think the floor has germs. I would pick it up and throw it in the garbage."

Thank you, Chelsea, I thought. Hearing someone take a principled stand for good hygiene brightened my spirits. Next, I asked: If you could bury anything tasty in the ground and have that something grow into a tree proliferating deliciousness year-round, what would you plant??

"A chocolate yummy!" I recall Jason proclaiming.?

"A taco," said Luke with a Spicoli-esque yawn.?

    "Doughnuts!" yelled Chelsea.

"I want a milky tree with candy and ice cream," said Reese.

    "A French-fry tree!" barked Jackson.?

    "Cookies," whispered Marco.

With the possible exception of Luke?s taco, meat was not mentioned. The class overwhelmingly wanted to plant sweet things: Ice cream, jelly beans, cake, muffins, and various fruits naturally found on trees in the first place. I knew that kids liked sweets, but the fantasies they shared?the orchards dusted with powdered sugar, the branches weighed down with icing?suggested a deep-seated love of glucose that couldn't be attributed to bad parenting and corn subsidies alone.?

From Candy Land to fairy tales like "Hansel and Gretel? to children's book characters like the Gingerbread Man and Willy Wonka, our popular culture invests sweets with magic, delight, and mystery. Television plays a role too?though apparently, in a bow to political correctness, even the Cookie Monster now views his long-time vice as a "sometime food.? Children's songs similarly cater to the sweeter side of the palate with "Who Stole the Cookies?" and "If All the Raindrops Were Lemon Drops and Gumdrops.??

Broadway to honor Jack Klugman and Charles Durning

NEW YORK (AP) ? The theater community will honor Jack Klugman and Charles Durning by dimming Broadway's lights in back-to-back memorials.

The marquees at all Broadway theaters will go dark for one minute at 8 p.m. Thursday in honor of Durning, who died Monday at 89. Durning amassed several important Broadway credits, including playing Big Daddy in a 1990 revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," David Rabe's "Boom Boom Room" and opposite George C. Scott in "Inherit the Wind" in 1996.

On Friday, the 40 Broadway marquees will go dark at 8 p.m. for Klugman, who also died Monday at 90. Klugman earned a Tony Award nomination for "Gypsy" in 1960 and his Broadway roles included parts in "I'm Not Rappaport" and "The Sunshine Boys."

'Rescue Me' singer Fontella Bass dies at 72

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

Fontella Bass, whose voice soared in the 1965 hit "Rescue Me," died Wednesday at 72, her family said in a statement.?

"She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren when she was called home," the family said, thanking the singer's famiy, friends and fans for their support.

St. Louis TV station KSDK reports that Bass died of a heart attack.

Bass came from a musical family. Her mother was gospel great Martha Bass, and her brother was R&B and gospel singer David Peaston, who died in February.

"Rescue Me" topped the R&B charts for a month in 1965, reached No.4 on the pop charts, and sold over a million copies. Yet Bass' name was never as famous as that of the tune, as many assumed the song was sung by Aretha Franklin instead. The very first line in Bass' entry in the online AllMusic encyclopedia reads, "The 1965 classic "Rescue Me" is widely regarded as the greatest record Aretha Franklin never made."

Gabe Palacio / Getty Images file

Her other hits included "Don't Mess With a Good Thing" and "You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone)," both with Bobby McClure.

Wrote one fan on the YouTube video for "Rescue Me": "Fontella Bass was one of the greatest soul / rhythm? & blues vocalists of the 60's & 70's. Her voice to this day all these decades later still chills my skin each time I hear her singing. she was one of my generation's most recognized yet often mistaken singers. Rest well, goddess of soul & blues, you'll be deeply missed & remembered always darling."

In 1993, she won a lawsuit against American Express for their use of "Rescue Me" in a 1990 commercial.

She is survived by four children.

No ethics breaches found in Countrywide VIP loans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House Ethics Committee says it found no violations by House members whose mortgage loans went through the VIP section of the former Countrywide Financial Corp.

The committee said nearly all the allegations involved loans that were granted so long ago that they fell outside the panel's jurisdiction. The committee added that participation in the VIP program did not necessarily mean borrowers received the best financial deal available.

The committee said that it was concerned with the actions of House staff members who may have reached out to Countrywide lobbyists for assistance with their personal loans.

The report said that if these staff loans had been more recent, there may have been disciplinary action.

GreggBrain reporting for duty! - ADK= Gaming Community

Hello everyone, my name is Gregg... or commonly in-game I'm GreggBrain.

    HOW I GOT HERE:

My first day in Planetside 2 I was invited to the TDK outfit by ProtossMaster, which surprised me since the outfit was actually organized rather than a complete mess of pubbers. I signed up on this site but lost track of time and didn't have a chance to come back and read what I needed to (rules, intro, recruitment, etc).

    WHO I AM:

I'm 27 years old and live in central California. I work for Frito-Lay as a manager (from the ranks of an hourly packer) and we make Lays, Ruffles, Tostitos, Doritos, Sunchips, and Cheetos at my facility. My gaming career started with consoles but my first computer, a Dell (when they were a good company), got me into PC gaming. Ever since I've built my own rigs by hand and thankfully have fixed more than I've broken.

As a hobby I love to cook and as of this post I just recently got done baking several hundred (if not more) cookies for friends and family this Christmas.

    WHAT I DO IN-GAME:

Medics/healers are always my specialty. K/D ratio means nothing if I can heal and/or resurrect my peers in battle. In fact, support in general is what I do best and if I have a competent leader I will follow wherever I need to be at any given point.

Well??I think that's as best a summary about myself as anyone would be interested in. All I can say now is... I'm glad to be here!

    Councillors refuse to use cellphones

TRACY NEAL Mike Ward, Derek Shaw and Gail Collingwood

    COLIN SMITH/FAIRFAX NZ

HANDS-FREE: Nelson city councillors Mike Ward left, Gail Collingwood and Derek Shaw do not own cellphones.

In a society which has forced dependence on cars and cellular communications, three city councillors refuse to succumb.

Perhaps they do not know what they are missing, or maybe that is the point.

Councillors Mike Ward, Derek Shaw and Gail Collingwood do not own cellphones, and the first two do not hold a driver's licence. Pedal-power or walking has long been the preferred mode of transport, while email has become the communications mode of choice for all three.

As a former parliamentarian Mr Ward once had a cellphone. An attempt to switch it to a private plan might have worked had he held a driver's licence.

"I went to the store in Nelson to renew the contract but they said I needed photo ID. I said, ?what do you mean, I was only drinking coffee with you the day before'.

"Because I don't have a licence, I took a clipping of a newspaper article that had a photo of me in it but they wouldn't accept it."

The final blow was when Mr Ward dropped the Blackberry in a puddle, and drowned it.

"I don't find it inconvenient. I'll always stop what I'm doing to talk to people if they want to drop into my studio.

"Because I don't have a cellphone I do what I've done forever - I let people know where I'm going."

The Hardy St studio is where Mr Ward now spends large parts of each day as a jewellery artist and preparing for council. Unlike Mr Shaw, he does have an answering machine on his home phone, but hardly ever clears his messages.

Mr Ward said he never got around to learning to drive.

"I once had a lesson with my mother when I was young but it was a bit chaotic. It wasn't much fun - maybe I was poorly co-ordinated or something.

"My younger brother went to sea and he owned a Morris 8 which he said I could drive, but I just never got around to it."

Mr Shaw chose not to have a cellphone because he does not need one. He said people got by without them before, but accepted they were good for keeping in touch with the children. If his partner did not have one then he probably would.

"Everyone else in the household has one so I figured I don't need one. I spend enough on communications, with two landlines, broadband and facsimile.

"Most people either fax or email me - I prefer email so I can respond in my own time."

Mr Shaw does not drive either. The family car is driven by his partner.

As a student Mr Shaw once held a motorbike licence, but let it lapse.

"I did resolve once to get a licence when there was a particular time I needed one when it proved inconvenient not to have one."

Those were the days of young children. "I decided I'd sit the test in Southland when we were down there on holiday, but when I got there the office was closed for a time and not open until after we were due to leave Invercargill.

"I took that as a sign I could do without it."

He takes their youngest son to athletics at Saxton Field on the tandem pushbike, but on the whole he did not think their children had been too disadvantaged. The elder two do not drive either.

"I admit it would be handy being able to share the drive to and from Invercargill though."

Mrs Collingwood felt she managed fine without a cellphone, as people seemed to prefer to use email anyway.

"I just felt I could manage without one. I have friends who have one in the event they're needed in an emergency, but they never switch them on. If there was an emergency no-one would be able to contact them."

Mrs Collingwood said she was "not a complete luddite", and rattled off the things she did like about mobile phones, like all the apps.

Tasman district counterparts all had cellphones and all drove a vehicle, which was essential because of the distances involved in getting around the district. Cellphones were also an essential tool in their roles, spokesman Chris Choat said.

Survey finds increase in e-reading, drop in paper

(AP) ? The tastes of the reading public are turning digital.

A Pew Internet Research Center survey released Thursday found that the percentage of Americans aged 16 and older who read an e-book grew from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year. Readers of traditional books dropped from 72 percent to 67 percent. Overall, those reading books of any kind dropped from 78 percent to 75 percent, a shift Pew called statistically insignificant.

Those owning an e-book device or tablet jumped from 18 percent to 33 percent, with much of that increase coming from last year's holiday season, when millions received Kindles, Nooks and other e-readers as gifts.

Awareness that libraries offer digital texts grew from 24 percent to 31 percent.

The telephone survey of 2,252 people aged 16 and older was conducted from Oct. 15 to Nov. 10. It has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

New laws intend to stop online exploitation

The Obama administration has announced changes in the regulations that protect children under 13 who use the internet. The new laws intend to improve data protection and stop companies from exploiting the information children post on social media, gaming and networking sites.

The new laws will take effect in July, and will amend the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998, with regulations that surround cellphones, tablets, networking services and mobile applications.

Advertisers and marketers can reap significant profits by gaining information on the activities of child consumers, but at present, the Federal government believes businesses have too much access to information that could give away physical location, contact data or names of persons under 13. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has continued with plans to add new privacy rules for children, despite claims that it would stifle growth in the tech industry.

Small businesses developing and distributing children's software, much of which is social in nature or includes social gaming components, also occasionally syphon data to third parties operating on these applications. When a child enters a name and email address for a real-life friend with whom he or she would like to play mobile games, some of this information is often taken away and used for advertising or marketing purposes. New regulations would make this activity illegal in order to improve privacy protection as well as messaging security.

According to Research and Markets, changes in payment technology are also making it easier to purchase products on mobile devices. Whereas before, a child would have to walk up to a cash register, a son or daughter who gets a hold of a parent's credit card could wreak havoc on a smartphone or tablet. New laws may also extend to purchases on mobile devices, making it harder for children to buy online goods without parental consent.

Earnings View: Why Investors Look at Stocks Differently

I?ve been meaning to write this article for a while now because I
think it?s the sort of subject little discussed in mainstream
journalism. Essentially, most investment journalism focuses on buying or
selling this stock or other with a forthright opinion expressed either
way. I understand why this formula works (not least because readers want
this), but there is usually very little discourse over how or where the
stock should fit in your portfolio. In addition, there is never any
discussion of the investment approach of the author, how it might affect
a decision over a stock or even the positioning of that stock within a
    portfolio.

In terms of portfolio construction, I have discussed the matter in an article linked here.?In this piece I want to focus on how different investors might view stocks differently.

    Same Stock, Different View

It's important for investors to understand that there is no absolute truth to investing. The key thing is to find a strategy or tactic that works for you and then implement it in a way that works for you. Then try to make sure that it works across market cycles and conditions. For the record, with me, this has always meant a diversified stock picking, growth at reasonable price (GARP) based approach. I tend to buy quality stocks that I think are 15-20% undervalued and in a position in the economy that I think has upside potential.

I?m not saying it is a perfect strategy, but I am saying it works for me. I?m also pointing out that sometimes I might look at a stock from this perspective and reject it because it doesn?t fit the model (Cue howls of derision and contempt in the comments section when a writer dares to mention that he doesn?t fancy a stock for his portfolio). The point is, it might not work for me but other investors who follow, say, a value or special situations based approach, might love the stock.

You have to do what works for you.

    Some Examples

I want to give some brief examples of what I mean here.

I?ve written about Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) quite a bit and I think neither stock fits the bill for a GARP based investor. I last covered Cisco here and Intel here. They share similar characteristics. Both are seeing growth slowing but present good long term value. Intel offers a very high dividend, and Cisco is turning itself into a value play by returning cash to shareholders. What both are not is companies that have much upside surprise (in my opinion) over the next six to twelve months. The semiconductor industry continues to downgrade expectations and the telcos remain reluctant to spend. Growth orientated investors like me don?t tend to buy such things, but that doesn?t mean that value players won?t make money from them!

Another example is Autodesk (NASDAQ: ADSK), which I covered in an article linked here. This is a company facing very difficult market conditions and a lot of near term risk combined with the execution risk inherent in its shift towards software as a service based sales.? Again this is not the sort of stock that a GARP based investor would buy, but why should that matter to a special situations investor? ?The latter tend to buy a lot of these sorts of stocks and hit a few huge home runs with them while missing with a lot of stocks elsewhere. Just because it doesn?t suit my portfolio profile, it doesn?t mean that it might not fit yours.

The last two examples are of stocks that I like but appreciate won?t fit other styles of investing are Allergan (NYSE: AGN) and Wabtec (NYSE: WAB). I hold both and wrote about them here and here. Now, I can understand why value investors won?t fancy Allergan on nearly 27x current earnings or Wabtec on 17x earnings.? However, both have relatively secure mid and long term growth prospects. Allergan has the opportunity to get Botox indications expanded, and its eye care division is well placed for stable growth amidst favorable demographic changes.

As for Wabtec , it has near term catalysts from positive train control (PTC) revenues and shale gas rail, while longer term there are geographical opportunities for expansion, and rail is seen as an energy efficient and cost effective way to transport goods.

Both stocks convert earnings into cash flow well, and despite the high rating, a GARP investor will be attracted to them while a value investor will simply balk at the evaluation.

    The Bottom Line

In conclusion, there is no right or wrong way to invest. The only wrong way is to not stay true to your principles, and the only right way is to try to keep those principles flexible. In the end, the aim is to generate favorable risk adjusted returns over the long term.

Sometimes writers don?t articulate why they favor certain stocks over others. They are afforded that regrettable luxury* because many of them don?t own anything they write about, so getting it wrong or right doesn?t really matter. For private investors, this luxury doesn?t exist, so the next time you read a stock write-up try to consider how the stock fits into your style of investing or your portfolio.

*For the record I do try to self impose a discipline of monthly write-ups and I do invest in stocks I write about
