Facebook to show off 'new look for News Feed' on March 7

Members of the press have been invited to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. to "come see a new look for News Feed" on March 7. Yes, folks ? it sounds like it's time for another redesign.

The March 7 event will kick off at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT and is on the heels of the social network's Graph Search announcement from about a month-and-a-half ago.

Leading up to this invite, there have been plenty of rumors of a Facebook redesign? albeit the focus has been on mobile and onthe Timeline. In early January, TechCrunch's Josh Constine reported that he'd seen an "employee-only iOS app build of an evolved form of Facebook's mobile news feed, which ditches the empty blue and white chrome for full-screen photo tiles and overlaid text."

Constantine described the layout as being so "fresh" that it could "make Facebook's feed exciting again."

More recently, the Next Web's Nick Summers caught sight of a single-column Timeline layout, which Facebook appears to be testing with users in New Zealand. But since Facebook's known for testing changes on a small percentage of its users before rolling them out to everyone, we wouldn't bet on the New Zealand experiment accompanying News Feed changes revealed on March 7.

Research unearths new dinosaur species

Friday, March 1, 2013

A South Dakota School of Mines & Technology assistant professor and his team have discovered a new species of herbivorous dinosaur and published the first fossil evidence of prehistoric crocodyliforms feeding on small dinosaurs.

Research by Clint Boyd, Ph.D., provides the first definitive evidence that plant-eating baby ornithopod dinosaurs were a food of choice for the crocodyliform, a now extinct relative of the crocodile family. While conducting their research, the team also discovered that this dinosaur prey was a previously unrecognized small ornithopod dinosaur species, which has yet to be named.

The evidence found in what is now known as the Grand Staircase Escalante-National Monument in southern Utah dates back to the late Cretaceous period, toward the end of the age of dinosaurs, and was published Feb. 27 in the academic journal PLOS ONE (Public Library of Science ONE).

A large number of mostly tiny bits of dinosaur bones were recovered in groups at four locations within the Utah park ? which paleontologists and geologists know as the Upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Kaiparowits Formation ? leading paleontologists to believe that crocodyliforms had fed on baby dinosaurs 1-2 meters in total length.

Evidence shows bite marks on bone joints, as well as breakthrough proof of a crocodyliform tooth still embedded in a dinosaur femur.

The findings are significant because historically dinosaurs have been depicted as the dominant species. "The traditional ideas you see in popular literature are that when little baby dinosaurs are either coming out of a nesting grounds or out somewhere on their own, they are normally having to worry about the theropod dinosaurs, the things like raptors or, on bigger scales, the T. rex. So this kind of adds a new dimension," Boyd said. "You had your dominant riverine carnivores, the crocodyliforms, attacking these herbivores as well, so they kind of had it coming from all sides."

Based on teeth marks left on bones and the large amounts of fragments left behind, it is believed the crocodyliforms were also diminutive in size, perhaps no more than 2 meters long. A larger species of crocodyliform would have been more likely to gulp down its prey without leaving behind traces of "busted up" bone fragments.

Until now, paleontologists had direct evidence only of "very large crocodyliforms" interacting with "very large dinosaurs."

"It's not often that you get events from the fossil record that are action-related," Boyd explained. "While you generally assume there was probably a lot more interaction going on, we didn't have any of that preserved in the fossil record yet. This is the first time that we have definitive evidence that you had this kind of partitioning, of your smaller crocodyliforms attacking the smaller herbivorous dinosaurs," he said, adding that this is only the second published instance of a crocodyliform tooth embedded in any prey animal in the fossil record.

"A lot of times you find material in close association or you can find some feeding marks or traces on the outside of the bone and you can hypothesize that maybe it was a certain animal doing this, but this was only the second time we have really good definitive evidence of a crocodyliform feeding on a prey animal and in this case an ornithischian dinosaur," Boyd said.

The high concentrations of tiny dinosaur bones led researchers to conclude a type of selection occurred, that crocodyliforms were preferentially feeding on these miniature dinosaurs. "Maybe it was closer to a nesting ground where baby dinosaurs would have been more abundant, and so the smaller crocodyliforms were hanging out there getting a lunch," Boyd added.

"When we started looking at all the other bones, we starting finding marks that are known to be diagnostic for crocodyliform feeding traces, so all that evidence coming together suddenly started to make sense as to why we were not finding good complete specimens of these little ornithischian dinosaurs," Boyd explained. "Most of the bites marks are concentrated around the joints, which is where the crocodyliform would tend to bite, and then, when they do their pulling or the death roll that they tend to do, the ends of the bones tend to snap off more often than not in those actions. That's why we were finding these fragmentary bones."

Melatonin no help for late-stage cancer weight loss

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Despite encouraging results in the past, melatonin pills did nothing to help advanced cancer patients eat more or stave off weight loss in a new clinical trial.

"We had great enthusiasm for it also based on these other trials, and were quite disappointed when it didn't work," lead author Dr. Egidio Del Fabbro told Reuters Health.

Some previous studies had suggested the hormone, which is involved in appetite and metabolism as well as sleep cycles in healthy adults, may increase appetite in cancer patients when taken in supplement form. But those studies did not include a group of patients given dummy pills for comparison.

"The reason for these other trials being positive was the placebo effect," said Del Fabbro, who studies rapid loss of muscle mass in cancer patients - a condition known as cachexia - at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Del Fabbro and his colleagues divided 70 patients with advanced lung or gastrointestinal cancer, poor appetite and recent unintentional weight loss into two groups. One group took 20 milligrams of melatonin every night for 28 days, and the other group took a placebo for the same period.

At the end of four weeks, the melatonin and placebo groups had essentially the same appetite, weight changes, pain levels and quality of life scores, Del Fabbro's team reports in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

For example, one representative patient in the melatonin group with a starting weight of 147 pounds lost almost two pounds during the study period, and one in the placebo group who started at 145 pounds also lost two pounds.

In late stage cancer, the body aggressively breaks down its own muscle mass, and patients have decreased appetite, nausea and reduced ability to absorb the nutrients they do eat.

"It's vital, it's probably the most under-recognized condition in advanced cancer," and often bothers families the most, Del Fabbro said. "Families feel (the patient) should just eat more, they should try harder," he said.

Treatment options are currently very limited, said Vickie Baracos, a professor of palliative care medicine who wrote an editorial accompanying the study.

High dose steroids can stimulate appetite, but extended use also causes muscle wasting and diabetes-like insulin resistance, so doctors often avoid using them, said Baracos, of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.

Melatonin, which is produced naturally in the body and available in supplements, does affect appetite, metabolism and control of body weight in healthy adults, according to Baracos. But that doesn't mean it will work for people with cancer, she said.

Melatonin is available in pill form in the U.S. without a prescription. A bottle of 5- or 10-milligram capsules costs about $10 at a drugstore.

Many cancer patients turn to potential remedies found on the Internet that have not been studied, Baracos said. She has known late-stage cancer patients to take up plant extracts, juices from tropical fruits, horse milk, and diets consisting mostly of cottage cheese.

"It's important to vet these other options, the trouble is getting federal funding," said Del Fabbro, whose department financed the melatonin study without outside support.

The hormone didn't cause any negative side effects, even at the high dose of 20 milligrams per day, he said, and it could be tried in another trial with cancer patients earlier in the progression of the disease to see if the results are different.

If advanced cancer patients still want to take melatonin, Baracos said, this trial indicates at least that it's unlikely to hurt them.

"Now a doctor has some evidence of good quality to stand on: it doesn't work, but it also doesn't do any harm," she said.

Well done! Since you are already doing this, have you thought about signing the Cost of Knowledge [thecostofknowledge.com] petition if you haven't already done? In theory, this will prevent at least Elsevier editors from asking you to review in the first place and hopefully help establish more momentum for change.

In my experience with declining requests to review, I have commonly mentioned access and/or price as concerns for declining and have found some sympathy with various editors. If this becomes more commonplace, hopefully

Apple shareholder drops lawsuit on preferred stock

(AP) ? A disgruntled shareholder pressing Apple to create a new class of preferred stock has dropped a lawsuit that became a moot point after the iPhone and iPad maker changed the agenda at its annual meeting earlier this week.

Lawyers for hedge fund manager David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital notified U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan in a letter sent Thursday that they no longer plan to pursue the lawsuit . Sullivan closed the case, which began three weeks ago in New York.

Einhorn had already achieved his goal last week when Sullivan issued a preliminary ruling blocking an Apple Inc. proposal that would have required shareholder approval before preferred stock could be issued. Apple withdrew the proposal from the agenda at its annual meeting held Wednesday.

Two shareholders who attended the annual meeting said they were disappointed that they weren't able to vote in favor of a proposal, which they described as an example of sound corporate governance.

Shareholders had reason to be even more discouraged Friday as Apple's stock touched a new 52-week low, deepening a roughly six-month slide that has wiped out more than $240 million of the company's market value.

Apple might be able to ease the pain of a 39 percent drop in its stock price by doling out some of its $137 billion cash hoard to shareholders instead of letting the money idle at a time when interest rates at near record lows.

Einhorn, whose fund owns 1.3 million Apple shares, filed his lawsuit to preserve Apple's ability to issue dividend-paying preferred stock without having to take the extra step of gaining shareholder approval. He is pushing Apple to issue preferred stock that would guarantee a 4 percent dividend.

Apple CEO Tim Cook dismissed Einhorn's lawsuit as a "silly sideshow" at an investment conference a few weeks ago and again Wednesday at the company's annual meeting. During a question-and-answer session with shareholders Wednesday, Cook said Apple's board is in "very, very active discussions" about what do with all its cash.

Apple, which is based in Cupertino, Calif., also has said it is considering whether to introduce another proposal that would require a shareholder vote on preferred stock. If another proposal is submitted, it probably wouldn't happen until Apple holds another annual meeting next year.

The company last year instituted a quarterly dividend of $2.65 per share on its common stock in a move that returns about $10 billion annually to shareholders. Apple's cash stash has grown by about $39 billion during the past year as customers bought its products in record numbers.

Despite Apple's success, investors are worried that the company's growth will soon taper off as it contends with fiercer competition in the smartphone and tablet computer market. The company also hasn't introduced a breakthrough product since the October 2011 death of Steve Jobs, Apple's charismatic co-founder and Cook's predecessor as CEO. It's most recent creation, the iPad, came out three years ago, raising concerns that Apple's well of innovation has run dry.

Cook sought to reassure shareholders that Wednesday's annual meeting, telling them that Apple is working on some "great stuff," including some products outside its core line-up of iPods, iPhones, iPads and Mac computers.

That vague promise hasn't excited Wall Street.

Apple's slumping stock fell to a new 52-week low of $430.78 on Friday before rebounding slightly in afternoon trading to $431.19, down $10.31, or 2.3 percent. The shares hit a record high of $705.07 in September when the iPhone 5 went on sale.
