Some fans thought the tweet wasn't exactly keeping with the pop star's "You're perfect the way you are" message and that her choice of the "#PopStarsDontEat" hashtag could be misinterpreted as encouraging eating disorders because she posits herself as a role model to her fans.
The National Eating Disorder Association even weighed in, hitting its own Twitter account to write, "Huh? This is the same person who recently implored girls to stop dieting?"

While it seems clear that Gaga was joking — who hasn't dove into a salad wishing it was something else? — the comment does appear out of character for the star, who has spoken publicly about her own struggles with an eating disorder as a teen.

Bob Bleck, who owns a computer networking firm in Ohio, struggled with poor sleep and chronic fatigue for decades. But it was only a year and a half ago that he finally went to a sleep clinic, prodded by his wife, who worried about his heavy snoring.
The diagnosis was severe sleep apnea. Tests showed that in a typical night, Bleck, 47, awoke or stopped breathing 42 times an hour.
His doctor prescribed a CPAP machine, and Bleck hated it.
?I had this constricted feeling,? he said. ?It would be incorporated into these dreams where I was tied up, like in the movie `Alien.? It was more difficult to sleep with that thing on then to just get through the night with the apnea.?

Susan Eagle, a minister and former London city councillor, remembers a time when she officiated over a funeral for someone who couldn?t afford the costs.
?We did the funeral with the dollars that (the city) provided. When I went to the funeral home to set up the funeral, I was informed that the money did not include visitation.?
The woman who died was young and left behind three little children. Eagle told the people at funeral home that it was terribly important that there be a visitation for the sake of the children so they could have some closure. ?At the time, I remember thinking who sets the rules that says visitation isn?t included as part of the basic package because isn?t that stupid.?

In Canada, dying can be an expensive affair. For those who are financially unstable, a funeral can be a daunting expense. But poor families are not without options when it comes to saying goodbye to loved ones, as municipalities offer financial assistance to those in need.
According to Statistics Canada, the funeral business in 2010 was worth approximately $1.66 billion. In that same year, Ontario accounted for nearly half of that total. The Registered Persons Database for the Ontario ministry of health and long-term care indicates the annual death total in the province to be more than 80,000 people.
The costs of a funeral vary greatly depending on the type of service a family asks for and the associated items selected. For example, caskets can range from $1,000 to more than $10,000, and the average costs for a full service funeral are just under $5,000, says Doug Manners, funeral director at?Donohue Funeral Home?in London, Ont. If you add those prices together and include taxes, the cost of a funeral can be considerable.
From 2008 to 2011, London provided funding for between 170 and 190 individual funerals each year, says Jackie Van Ryswyk, manager of intake and?discretionary benefits.
The amount of money provided for funerals varies between municipalities, but in London $3,605, excluding taxes, is granted to eligible families, in addition to the cost of the burial or cremation, which can cost another $1,000. The $3,605 covers the removal of the body and the basic care of the deceased, a two-hour visitation, a service ? with the possibility of a member of the clergy ? a newspaper notice and other documentation, says Van Ryswyk.
Manners has been a licensed funeral director for 20 years. For as long as he has been in that job, municipalities have provided assistance for people who cannot afford a funeral. Manners estimates Donohue Funeral Home served about eight or 12 families through the funeral program offered by discretionary benefits last year.
?With any family we don?t make any assumptions or considerations from a financial standpoint,? says Manners. ?Our first priority is looking after that family.?
Before a person can receive funding, discretionary benefits must deduce that the person is eligible. ?We look at assets and bank accounts. We need to verify that type of information,? says Van Ryswyk. ?If they?re receiving assistance we know that, and they may be approved right over the phone.?
Once a person is approved, discretionary benefits provides a funeral home of the family?s choice with a funeral order number. After this stage, the family is left to decide how the funeral will be carried out. ?We provide the funeral home with the order number and then the bill will come to us,? says Van Ryswyk.
Eagle, who now lives in Barrie, remembers there being a showdown between the city and the funeral homes in her last year on council in 2010.? She says the funeral homes sent a joint letter demanding an increase in the amount of money the city offered for assisted funerals. ?They were basically demanding that there be an increase or they were going to refuse to do funerals on behalf of people in the community.?
This past February, the city raised the amount of funding it will provide to the current $3,605. Before then the city paid up to $2,270, a price that was set in 2004, according to numbers provided by John Donohue, manager of Donohue Funeral Home. Before then the amount was $1,823, a price that had been around since 1992.
Van Ryswyk believes providing funeral assistance is an important aspect of discretionary benefits. ?We deal with a very vulnerable population that doesn?t have a lot of resources. So I think it?s important that we provide that service for families like that in their time of need.?
?People need closure, they need the opportunity to deal with death,? adds Eagle, who has been a minister in the United Church for 30 years. ?Most of us know that a funeral is not for the person that died; it?s for the family.?
Manners believes it?s the duty of the funeral home to look after each family no matter their individual financial situations. He says he knows of many times when the funeral home would provide a service that was not part of what was provided through social assistance, including additional time for visitation or transportation.

In broaching the topic of expenses Manners says experience counts. ?You learn a lot about people in spending a bit of time with them,? he says. ?People make comments, or they may have a look on their face, or they may ask, ?you know, how do you want to be paid, or when do we have to pay, or I don?t really know how we can do this.??
?The last thing I?d want anyone to do is to find themselves in financial hardship to provide a funeral for a member of their family,? he says.
But the discrepancies between the actual cost and government provisions are significant. By providing the exact same level of service for families receiving assistance, the funeral homes operate at what ends up being a financial loss, says Manners.
?Our concern is not the quality of service or the level of service. We?re here always to look after the families that come to ask us for help, regardless of their financial situation and regardless for who is paying,? he says.
The rates and terms of assistance for families who cannot afford to pay for a funeral varies between municipalities. In London, the city does not dictate to families what they are entitled to but offers a base level from which the family can upgrade at their own expense. This differs from the GTA for example, where Manners also worked, where the cities decide what the family gets and does not allow for variation.
When Eagle was still in London, she was at odds with the policy of setting restrictions on what was provided by the city. ?Most of our clergy are willing to volunteer to do something. But on the other hand here?s the government expecting that everybody else will pick up the pieces,? she says. ?There?s a little bit of thought there, like, what?s in it for the government to make it that undignified for people. It makes it a different funeral than a regular funeral.?
It?s difficult to define just what a dignified funeral is, because it?s all based on the impression or opinion of the individual, says Manners.
In his opinion, it shouldn?t matter whether the family is receiving assistance or is paying $10,000 or more ? everyone is entitled to the same treatment.
?What I know for certain is the way that things are done here, regardless of the type of funeral someone is having, our approach to provide that dignity is the same. So everyone in my mind receives a dignified funeral.?

'RJ Berger' Star Paul Iacono Comes Out
23-year-old actor opens up to The Village Voice about his sexuality and his new show, 'Kenzie's Scale.'

"The Hard Times of RJ Berger" star Paul Iacono took to Twitter on Wednesday to open up about his personal life, announcing to the Internet that he is gay.
"Yes I'm gay," he tweeted. "And yes, it does get better. #YOLO." (#YOLO is short for "You Only Live Once.") Iacono opened up about his decision to come out in an interview with The Village Voice, noting that while he does identify himself as gay, he believes that sexuality isn't all that black and white.

"I didn't think I'd be coming out. But why not now? I think it's the right time to say something. It's not about me, it's about change and the work," he explained in the interview, adding that his sexuality wasn't always something he was comfortable talking about.
"I grew up in a really old-school Italian traditional family in New Jersey. I tried coming out a couple of times as a kid, from 13-14 on, and was always squashed on," he recalled, before noting that it then took years for him to open up to his family about it.
"I was just coming to terms with the fact that I was bisexual, which culturally I do identify with as a gay man — I am attracted to girls, I'm just attracted to guys much more. I had to feign heterosexuality for a couple of years," the 23-year-old explained. "It messed with my head. It took me a longer time to be OK with it. It was not until I was 18 that I came out with my mom and 20 with my dad. I was older and able to address it from a different perspective."
He now wants to explore those themes on his new show, "Kenzie's Scale," which is not only the name of a character on the show, but also a reference to the famed Heterosexual-Homosexual Rating Scale designed by Dr. Alfred Kinsey that places a person's sexuality on a scale of one to six.
"The whole reason we came up with 'Kenzie's Scale' is to give young gays characters to look up to. ... I didn't have much to look up to as a kid," he explained to The Village Voice. "I had to search to find like-minded images. I'm happy to be that person so kids won't have to grow up and be afraid of their sexuality and this won't be an issue." The show follows a young couple, Cole (Iacono) and Kenzie, who continue to live together as roommates in New York City after Cole realizes he's gay. Iacono described the show as a "radical young 'Will & Grace.' "

Serious complication of gastrointestinal procedure can be avoided with single dose medication
ScienceDaily (Apr. 11, 2012) ? A study in the current issue of the New England Journal of Medicine shows a serious complication of ERCP, a procedure commonly used to diagnose and treat problems of the bile and pancreatic ducts, may be eliminated with a single dose medication.
The finding is significant in helping patients avoid a condition known as post-ERCP pancreatitis, a disabling complication that affects up to 1 in 4 high-risk patients who undergo the gastrointestinal procedure.
Despite decades of research, this clinical trial is the first to clearly demonstrate effective prevention of post-ERCP pancreatitis.
The trial ended early after an interim analysis showed clear safety and benefit for the first 600 patients enrolled. The findings are already changing clinical practice.
?ERCP is a very important procedure that can provide life-saving interventions for people who need it, although it is considered the most invasive of all the endoscopic procedures and it does have risks associated with it,? says lead study author and gastroenterologist B. Joseph Elmunzer, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Health System.
Post-ERCP pancreatitis is a sudden swelling and inflammation of the pancreas that costs an estimated $150 million a year to treat.
According to the study, hospitalizations for post-ERCP pancreatitis were dramatically reduced by administering a single dose of indomethacin, an anti-inflammatory medication that costs less than $5.
The drug is part of a category of non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs that?s believed to inhibit an inflammatory response by the pancreas that can occur after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP.
ERCP combines a lighted scope inserted through the mouth and X-ray pictures to examine the tubes draining the liver, gallbladder and pancreas.
In the study, only 9.2 percent of patients who took indomethacin developed post-ERCP pancreatitis compared to 16.9 percent of those who took a placebo ? a 46 percent drop in relative risk.
?The results of the study were very impressive,? Elmunzer says. ?We found that indomethacin was highly protective.?
Some patients have the GI procedure repeated as doctors examine the bile duct and pancreatic duct for growths, stones, open a narrowed duct or to seal leaks after surgery.
Funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the trial was conducted February 2009 to July 2011 at the U-M Health System, Indiana University, University of Kentucky and Case Western Reserve University.
The study is the first executed by the United States Cooperative for Outcomes Research in Endoscopy, which provides an open platform for gastrointestinal programs to conduct large-scale patient studies.
Patients like Jessica Calcagno, 24, are benefiting from the research. During an ERCP procedure doctors found and removed a growth, but afterwards Calcagno experienced severe stomach pain that she says was so unbearable she sought help at an emergency room.
She was diagnosed with post- ERCP pancreatitis and hospitalized for five days. At her next ERCP at the U-M?s Division of Gastroenterology, she was given indomethacin.
?Following the procedure, I went home and felt fine. I was a little sore, but that?s standard so it was great,? she says. ?I have many more ERCP procedures to go through in my life. I feel comfort knowing that I can leave after the procedure and not develop pancreatitis.?
Given the magnitude of the problem, over the years researchers have studied more than 35 drugs to prevent post-ERCP pancreatitis, with uncertain conclusions.
?Health care costs in the United States are soaring, so it?s important for the scientific community, even individual practitioners, to find innovative, low-cost ways to improve health,? Elmunzer says.
?I think indomethacin is a perfect example of a widely available, inexpensive, easily administered drug that does exactly that ? improves clinical outcomes at extremely low-cost.?

A few years back, we formed an official Matchstic Advisory Board and we have two meetings per year where we have the privilege of picking the brains of some brilliant folks who have been down this road before. ?Last night was one of those meetings, so it has me thinking a lot about our future plans for our business. One of the things we have been working on is a clear roadmap for what will bring us success in the future. ?When working through a business model, there is a lot of work around staffing, financial modeling, etc. But one of the foundational elements of our company is the fact that we know we have to continue to have a focused brand. ?Being a branding firm doesn't exclude us from the rules of branding, nor does preaching about branding make it any easier to stay focused and not get distracted with opportunities that would cause us to lose our focus. ?I have made many mistakes in running this company. Some of the worst have been centered around chasing a dollar when the work was outside of our core area of expertise and what our brand is known for.
As simple as it is, the principles of branding (clarity, focus, differentiation, alignment & authenticity) will set a business up for the most success. ?You can have the best systems and process and financial modeling, but without a solid brand, it will not work. ?Not only does it make sense in my head, but running a business brings me to the point of knowing it in my heart.

Adam Levine is, well, in misery. After his Sports Illustrated swimsuit model girlfriend of two years, Anne Vyalitsyna, dumped him, she announced it to the world April 2 without giving him a heads-up.
"It was a cheap shot," a pal tells the new issue of Us Weekly?(out now). "Anne didn't want it to look like he broke up with her."

The Maroon 5 frontman and "Voice" mentor, 33 -- who was home in L.A. when Vyalitsyna broke up with him from NYC -- "was blindsided," says a Levine pal. "Adam's heartbroken. He wasn't even fully sure they were really broken up."

Though Levine didn't predict a split, friends of the couple saw it coming. "Anne said he didn't pay her enough attention," a friend of the model, 26, tells Us.

Lakeland Housing Inventory Is Shrinking | Lakeland Local

It has been a while since I last reported on the current real estate market in Florida, especially it?s current housing inventory. Back in 2009 when I first started with my weekly inventory update, Lakeland?s housing inventory was over 2,000 homes. In 2010, Lakeland homes for sale slipped to 1800 homes and by mid June 2011 it?s inventory shrunk further to around 1400 homes that were for sale.Let?s jump to April 2012 and take a look at the current Lakeland FL housing inventory:
1133 Lakeland FL Homes for Sale ? active status (04/05/12)- 779 homes for sale that are traditional sales
- 269 homes for sale that are short sales
- 85 homes for sale that are bank-owned/foreclosures
66 Lakeland homes currently have a status of ?active with contract?
- 3 homes for sale that are traditional sales
- 61 homes for sale that are short sales
- 2 homes for sale that are bank-owned/foreclosures
708 Lakeland homes currently have a status of ?pending?
- 223 homes that are traditional sales
- 398 homes that are short sales
- 87 homes that are bank-owned/foreclosures.
This reduction of Lakeland housing inventory is a clear indication that we are heading in the right direction of a balanced housing market. However, I do suspect with more foreclosure inventory homes in some communities may continue to drive the housing prices down a bit. Remember real estate is and will remain local, where some markets or communities may improve other areas or neighborhoods may remain the same or even fall just like in 2011.
How come 2011 Lakeland home prices sucked so badly? Our pipeline with homes under contract (pending) at 708 that includes 398 short sales most of them will not close next month, if at all and that is exactly what happened in 2011. Short sales that weren?t approved or mortgages that didn?t get commitment or clear to close, the pending numbers do not represent a fast approaching housing recovery. Moreover, until we see lenders doing their part to accommodate the seller?s delinquent loans ?approving them in a timely manner ? the housing recovery will remain flat.
The bad news is the Lakeland Florida housing market remains flat. And that will most likely be the new normal market for the foreseeable future.
Prices will remain low due to the distressed housing market. Buyers are more savvy, they don?t want to spend more than they can afford. They want instant equity and with foreclosures and short sales selling at deep discounts, the traditional seller has no other choice than to adjust their listing price if they want or need to sell. In addition, buyers have their own struggles with the lender to commit loaning money to them.
I suspect the roller coaster ride will continue throughout 2012 in Lakeland with up and down prices and up and down sales.

Exploring the Genre of the Dissertation | NASSR Graduate Student ...
During the hours that I assigned for my dissertation yesterday, I had a bit of a genre-identity crisis. I was editing and revising parts of a chapter in the morning when I discovered that I have been following no more than an idea *in my imagination* of what a dissertation should look like. Of course my prospectus outlined my chapters and my proposed argument, and has already been approved by my committee, but that piece of writing did not require me to think about the dissertation from within its draft or its guts.
I sought a model to consult ? a concrete finished dissertation product to admire, toggle/flip through, and to orient my work in both form and content. Though I have read a small library of books and articles on the path to where I am now in my PhD, I have yet to read an entire dissertation. In fact, I haven?t even read a full dissertation chapter. In other words, yesterday I felt as though I was trying to compose a genre I knew nothing about and was not prepared to write. (Not true, I?ve since learned!)
The genre-identity crisis manifested in a swarm of questions. How much space should I allow to record the current critical conversation in which my argument intervenes? What belongs in a footnote and what belongs in my body paragraphs? Should my chapters be about 50 pages long and framed as long arguments/explorations of a single topic, or divisible into two articles of about 25 pages each, in order to make it easier to (try to) publish diss chapters as articles (the latter was my plan)? But is it prudent to write chapters as if they are articles, or multiple articles sewn together? How long should the arc of each chapter?s argument and investigation be? Why do I feel like I?m spelunking? Can I get away with writing shorter chapters that are the length of articles that I might submit to a peer-reviewed journal? In other words, what should the genre of the dissertation look like?
To prevent prolonged worrying and inefficiency during this busy part of the semester, I wrote to my dissertation committee co-chairs right away and posted some related questions on Twitter. I have received a collection of thoughtful and useful responses that I think are important to share.
I?m not writing a dissertation; I?m writing a book. This isn?t as pretentious as it sounds, I promise?I have no illusions about being able to produce a publication-quality book quite yet. However, I was advised to see the dissertation as the incunabulum, so to speak, of my first book project. ?The dissertation,? I was told, ?is a dead-end genre? and my future as scholar depends on my ability to write a good book. Furthermore, many scholars revise their dissertations to complete their first book project as a tenure-track professor.
Importantly, I was also cautioned against trying too hard to actually write a book ?that is, a book both in form and content quality ? while finishing my doctorate (see my disclaimer in the above paragraph). Efficiency and timely completion of my degree and entrance into the job market are important to me. While I strive to write a beautiful, organized dissertation that offers new ideas supported by a wealth of research in my field, I am also realistic about the time it would take (not to mention the learning curve) to do so as a proper book project and I?m cognizant of that fact that my funding will not last forever.
Numbers: The statistics I was given are the criteria for a book published by a university press: 75,000 to 90,000 words in length, and 4-6 chapters in length in addition to an introduction. Each chapter in typescript should run between 35-50 pages in length ? I will lose about a third of my manuscript?s length when the book is typeset.
Chapters: Each chapter should focus on one major issue. Thus, it is unlikely that I will be able to derive two articles from a single chapter. Building this book project draft by thinking about each chapter as one slightly long article is a good idea, I was told. The difference between a chapter and an article is that a chapter allows for more exploration of a topic (so this is why I?ve been feeling a bit like an explorer, which I love).
Models: Find published books for models, not articles, dissertation chapters, or complete dissertations. These don?t necessarily need to be the books whose arguments I admire most?though they may be. Rather, they should be books that I would like my own book project to resemble when it is finished. The big questions are how do I want my project to resemble these works and how will my project differ?
The Department/Committee Factor: Each department has its own unique standards and each dissertation committee has its own set of expectations and criteria for what a good dissertation will accomplish within that department. These factors are more palpable during revision processes but it will pay off to consider them in advance as much as is possible and pragmatic. The expectations and precedents set by of the dept. and committee are also important when considering how to include or align work with digital projects or components of the dissertation. I do a lot of digital work on electronic texts and archives and will be putting a lot of careful thought into how my digital projects dialogue with my dissertation and how best to treat those projects to convey my argument and work as well as meet requirements.
Audience: One respondent on Twitter who is finishing her dissertation wrote that ?a dissertation is for 3 people, a book has an audience.? At first, I found this depressing to say the least, but after some thought I have decided that I disagree and am therefore no longer depressed by this idea. Though the dissertation committee is the first audience that this project will see, it is not the only audience. As chapters will become articles and the work as a whole is an early draft of a book project, the dissertation?s components all ?cook? together and will emerge to a larger readership than those on the dissertation team within the department. Furthermore, dissertation chapters are also the groundwork, potentially, for insightful conference papers as well as job talks.
Having solicited and received such useful advice, I have some reframing and planning to do with my current draft and I am on the hunt for five or so books that I hope to model my project on.
